Hi Folks,
a buddy of mine is trying to improve fitness and wants to get back into cycling after a very long absence. Unfortunately this absence was accompanied by significant weight gain and we struggle to find an entry gravel/all-road bike that can actually support his weight.
Is anyone aware of some robust bikes sold in the EU (Germany) for 2k Euros or less, which can support a system weight of 150k? The best I found so far were Cannondales Topstone AL bikes, which go up to 138kg and remain within budget. Any ideas welcome, as long as they fit within the constraints and don’t start with „loose weight"
Thanks
Looks promising, thank you. Unfortunately I have yet to find a local dealer. Even online I’ve not found a build Straggler
My bad advice -
If you find a bike with a 138kg limit is a good fit on everything except weight limit, I’d consider going with that bike and just keep it on the road and tame gravel until the rider gets comfortably under the weight limit. All that said, I generally look at rules/limits more like “guidelines” and try to understand where they are coming from rather than looking at them in black and white. I’d bet riding that bike with a 138kg limit on the road is going to be less likely to fail compared to riding a bike with a 150kg limit and hitting rough terrain on it (which is how an off road bike is going to be rated/certified). Even a 100kg rider is going to put a lot more force/stress on a bike when doing serious off road activities compared to a rider 2x their weight riding on smooth roads. Not saying any of that is right or is guaranteed not to fail, just a potential alternate path depending on how the rider sees things and how risk averse they are.
I’d check if the limiting factor aren’t just the wheels. There’s a similarly heavy guy in my club, who kept breaking his wheels, but the rest of the bike was fine. If it’s the wheels, you could swap for some MTB wheels, which should be sturdier.
Otherwise, if the frame is a limiter and he really wants a gravel bike, you could maybe get a MTB frame and put drop bars on it.
Why not an MTB or XC bike with much better gearing?

This is the type of question that the AI models are good at answering
Mostly looks, as far as I’m aware
Querying the swarm intelligence is easier
But the Giant Revolt is a great idea and there’s almost always a dealer for those around.
