Head unit advice please: traffic light display

I’m using an older Garmin 530 Edge and would like to be able to see Heart rate and power in graphic / analogue format instead of numerical format. Ideally an Amber / Green / Red with the different colours displaying for Zones, 3 zone model suits this best. I have tried “Edge Dashboard” on the Garmin platform but this shows power only and has a cluttered display, not great on the small Garmin unit. wondering if newer /larger units come with this type of display, or does some other company do this better than Garmin, or is there another 3rd party app for Garmin that would provide this display, with thanks,

If you can use the IQ apps I have one called Power Datafield that shows my 30s power in coloured format. I made the text the same as the background so all I see is the zone colour.

You can adjust the power duration but 30s is good for pacing.

Does this work with HR too?

@JSexton - I haven’t tried it, but maybe this ConnectIQ app? Says it works with 530.

Looks good thanks, i will give it a go. Had wondered if this is standard feature on any newer devices, or on the alternates, wahoo etc.

Yep, Wahoo Roam <= v2 has configurable LCD lights for that. Can show pace, power zone or HR zone. Unfortunately latest versions do not have it anymore.

Those LEDs were a great idea but weren’t bright enough imo.

If there was a sun shade or similar they’d be pretty useful.

I thought I would love them, but quickly realized I’m far more likely to just look at the data field, probably just out of habit

Hammerhead Karoo has what you’re looking for.

Yeah, I like colorized numeric field as well but I am trying to maximize map area on navigation page. This leaves me with only 2 data fields. I have chosen 3sec power + remaining interval time. Without LED indicators, I probably would go with 3sec power + colorized HR and rely on interval begin popup instead.

Brilliant thanks, I will have a look, How well will Hammerhead work if all sensors are Garmin?

Absolutely no issues with any sensors on the hammerhead

I’ve been using Power Color BG data field on my Edges and it works great at the bottom of the map field. A glance tells me which zone I’m in by the color (7 zone model). Usually I’m looking for the blue for Z2. It uses an average of the past few seconds power, and the number overlayed is current power so you get extra information. Given my eyes aren’t what they were, just using color is great.

Brilliant thanks, i haven’t used maps as generally know the roads I’m on but will look that up, sounds like just whats needed. Thanks Everyone for the help. Great community.

You’ll figure this out, but it doesn’t have to go on the map, it’s a data field so can go anywhere like any other data field.

The Edge 530 has HR and Power graph fields out of the box: perhaps some of them match your requirements.

There are several different graphs, for example HR graph, HR bar graph and HR Zone graph.

I just got a Karoo, switching after countless yrs on Garmin. It’s great. I love this computer. More user friendly and intuitive than Garmin and does what you’re looking for, just a 5 zone model for HR and Power. So many ways to display the information. Truly excellent.

My wahoo roam v2 can do this with the led lights as mentioned above but there is also a setting that the field color changes for heart rate and also for power. Feature isn’t available on the Roam V1 but is on the V2. Here is a pic of how it looks on a Roam 3

There are other graphs in the Edge computers too, but I like the rolling graph for HR and power (the two lower fields) that use different colours for zones.

The fields have been available at least from 530.

FYI, there is a Connect IQ data field called “MapDashboard” that let’s you display 6 data fields under your map (Not sure if workout-fields are available, but most common fields are).
It also has coloured bars that you can setup based on FTP or HR.

@GPLama has a video about it and I’ve been using it ever since:
