Has anyone had an avulsion fracture of their 5th metatarsal and, if so, how long before you were riding again?

It happened this morning. A ride I’ve been training for is in a little less than a month. Just looking for some hope.

No experience with that one, but plenty of broken bones and they are all different. It’s really a question for your Ortho who can see your x-rays and should be able to give you an idea of recovery time and risk/reward of pushing it. This is where the right Dr. can be important. Hopefully you are working with someone who deals with athletes and understands the motivation for big events. Don’t be afraid to push/engage the Dr., many are going to just give you the standard answer unless you make your desires clear. I’ve had some great orthos who are used to dealing with athletes and will spend the time to work through recovery options.

My main concern when coming back from injury is whether I can do more damage or cause a recovery setback. Some injuries are just about pain tolerance and you can go as soon as you can tolerate it, others you just need to be patient and heal.

Thanks for your response. I met the ortho yesterday and he started to tell me 4 weeks in the boot. When I expressed concern about not being able to train, he scheduled an appointment for 2 weeks to assess where I am. Right now, I’ve got so much swelling that my main focus is to get that under control. If I can, maybe I can get back to some light riding. I’m hopeful!

Not the same, but i had an avulsion fracture of my hip, and i went from not being able to walk to gravel riding in 4 weeks. So maybe theres something to that 4 week estimate

I haven’t dealt with this in a cycling context, but friends in my day job (ballet) who have dealt with this have graduated pretty quickly from the boot to a supportive, very stiff-soled shoe. So if your cycling shoes are nice and solid, there’s hope?

Hope is good! It’s still really swollen but it’s starting to reduce a little.
