Yeah I have an 830 and I find that with navigation going I could probably get 10+ hours on a charge with auto-backlight.
Quick one, how long did it take to load Spotify? I am at the ‘performing streamed install’ phase atm, been there for a while.
i am using a Bolt V1 so far and am looking for an upgrade.
Looking at the 530 Garmin, especially liking the ClimbPro feature.
I am torn between 530 and Hammerhead. Is there anything like ClimbPro on the Hammerhead?
It was pretty quick for me, but I installed APKPure and then used that app to install it.
If you are following a route you can use a graphical data field for upcoming elevation. It defaults to showing the next 5 km. If you go off the route and get re-routed you also get upcoming elevation.
I’d expect the Karoo to have almost identical features (colour coding of gradients etc) to ClimbPro by the end of this year there as new features are being added every couple of weeks.
I would say compared to the 530 the only downside is the battery life (due to full Android) if you happen do a lot of very long 9+ hour rides.
Sidenote - this is what I am talking about with the impressively constant improvement: Software Release Notes – Hammerhead AU
quite intrigued now. hmm, maybe I will go for it and test it out
Currently, no. If there are specific Garmin features you can’t do without, then I’d stick with Garmin. I personally found many of the garmin niche features useless. I was excited when they released, but when trying to use them the usability was lacking. Climb pro was one i was disappointed in.
Hammerhead’s development cycle is A+. So it is possible they add something in future. If you want the fancy gadgets that work half the time, go Garmin. If you want a solid, but less fancy features, head unit then go with K2.
why the disappointment?
It was identifying way too many “climbs”. I would do a ride with 4 climbs. Climb pro would detect like 15. Some were just 1-2% false flats over say 10 miles. Sometimes it would be a downhill . It seemed to be way too sensitive and had issues identifying the real start and end to climbs.
I could maybe see where it would be better than strava segments if you are riding away from home. K2’s strava segment implementation is light years ahead of Garmins btw.
I have zero tolerance for anything that doesn’t reliably work. Five years with a 520 and 530. Never sacrificed chickens. Never lost a ride. Maybe one handful of fast reboots mid-ride, out of 1000+ rides, nothing lost and no drama. I’ve been in the software industry for 30+ years and I’d never buy something on the hope it will get added. Buy what works today.
All the major bike computers are good enough and I could live with any of them. Differences come down to feature sets, 3rd party apps/datafields, and price. Bought the 530 because I think of these computers as disposable and paid less than $300, great price/performance. The Karoo 2 wasn’t available then.
I hear ya. It’s because that tolerance that I gave the K2 a shot. And im way happier. There’s many things garmin does better (ciq fields, third party sensor connectivity through ciq, way more fancy features, way way better dashboard and multiple device integration). If a company shows that they are willing and capable of fixing things, i have way more tolerance. And I gave Garmin a long time. They just aren’t capable. Garmins do more things than the K2. But everything the K2 does, it does it way better. So I really do see it as personal preference and each has to decide what important to them. I still have my 1030 and 1000 collecting dust. Need to put them up for sale.
can I use the HH to track other sports than cycling? I am using the Bolt to record my indoor rowing heartrste.
And, can I define Profiles as GPS ON or GPS OFF. Or is this a generel setting I have to switch off every time?
Feel totally totally the same, long term Garmin owner, fully bought into the Garmin infrastructure (scales, varia radar and lights, fenix on wrist, owned edge 200, 500, 800, 520, 820) didn’t enjoy my 820 (when you know which buttons to press in order to factory reset you know that it has problems) and been following routes a lot more recently in order to explore a little bit more, found the 820 awful when it came to re-routing
Was looking at 1030plus (wanted a bigger screen for my aging eyes) but decided to give the Karoo 2 a punt, agree with you, there are a lot of things that Garmin do better, dashboard e.t.c. but couldn’t be happier with my descision, Karoo’s re-routes are instant, screem is reactive and clear. menu’s and button press’s are consistant
As a software developer for 30 years, the one thing that really does impress me is not only that the do GOOD updates every couple off weeks, not just a load of bug fixes, but the updates also apply to the Karoo1, meaning you don’t have to upgrade to the latest hardware to get the latest software/features unlike garmin
on a different note, i really appreciate modern approaches, but the HH website is a bit too fancy. barely any part of the site there works on either firefox or safari. it is nice to have an interactive website, but this is too much and simply does not work.
some questions to current users:
- can I import fit files to the HH dashboard from Dropbox? Would hate to loose my Wahoo rides
- can I change a planned route on the fly, on the device?
- can somebody post a picture how the TR app looks sideloaded on the HH?
- can I use the device to monitor HR for non-cacling workouts?
Really, I only use firefox (work and play) and have no problems with the HH site, which pages play you up, the Komoot another story, but HH dashboard no issues
not speaking about the dashboard, I mean their product homepage… not working properly on IOS Firefox nor Safari
Ahh, no problems there either, but am windows only
here is a nice video of DCRainmaker how the TR app works on the HH. looks fine for me
I haven’t tried this on the K2, but the gps shows under the sensor list where you can turn it on and off. I don’t believe you can link gps activity to profiles at this time.
I saw you mentioned HH’s site. I will tell you about there dashboard. It is very lacking, nothing like Garmin. I actually never even go there. They are making improvements to it every release (every 2 weeks). But it’s so far behind that it would take major changes to make it worthwhile.
