Group rides with faster guys than you?

This. Riding in a pack, especially a strong, well-established group, helps grow your peloton skills, which in turn keeps you safer and makes you a safer rider for others. Nothing is worse than being in a group of untrustworthy wheels, especially when they want to hammer.

The runners who are doing workouts together are often doing them on the track because their coach is present and assigning time goals for each athlete individually. They might all start their intervals at the same time, but they don’t all have the same prescription.

When running 200s, 400s, 800s, 1k, etc., the difference of a few seconds between athletes is common and no big deal.

In cycling, you’re doing longer intervals from 4 - 30, or even 60 minutes, so two athletes doing different power numbers for those intervals means that they aren’t going to stick together for long.
