Good bye to a bike

Not the best picture, but this is the CAAD12 that served me well from 2019 until a few weeks ago when I noticed a crack in one of the welds.

The silver lining to the whole situation is that while the warranty was getting sorted out, I bought a gravel bike for a replacement, while we waited for the new frame. The new CAAD, expected much later this year, came two days after the gravel bike (Niner RLT Steel) showed up at the house.

Long ago had to say goodbye to this a number a years ago due a crash…

moving right along replaced it with something a little more modern… moving right into the 80’s…

and that too has gone back to where I found it. The local non profit bike store.

The bikes might be gone, but I have these images and as such all the memories too.

My 2012 Tarmac SL3. Seatstay is cracked, so this bike is done one way or another. Bought it to “replace” a 2005 Allez, which is not only my trainer bike, but I rode it outside just yesterday.

What’s Tetra Tri?

I’m partial to Tetra Min.

Sounds fishy.

I sold the first mountain bike I ever had. It was a DiamondBack that I had upgraded a few times, and had the first wheelset I had ever built. After selling it, I had major sad feelings about selling it.

So 5 years or so later, I was out on the trail, riding my new hotness mountain bike, and saw a hint of a mint blue frame in the distance ahead of me. As I got closer, I noticed features that were on the bike I had sold. As I passed, I recognized the wheels. They were pretty rare apparently) And I was positive it was that old ride. I didn’t recognize the rider, but my eyes got moist as I rode on realizing it was still out there, still being used. It was a great bike for the university I went to and worked at. It had all the braze-ons for racks and panniers. I had hundreds if not thousands of miles on it.

I haven’t sold a bike since. shrug I did donate a bike to a recycle-a-bike outfit, and when they folded, went back and found it, and ‘recovered’ it before it went to scrap. Sad…

I have a 26" Trek 9800 carbon mountain bike that I will never likely ride again, but can’t see getting rid of it, it’s so amazing looking. I upgraded that several times too…

But it’s great to sell a bike and see that it’s still being used. I would hate to sell a bike and find out that it was either stolen, ignored, or never ridden. What a crime… Ride on!

The yellow bike is the first and only bike I have ever said good bye to. Got it from Canyon in 1999. 9 speed Ultegra. Sold it to my father 4 years later when I got the blue Canyon with 9 speed Dura Ace.
The yellow bike has now done a comeback as my 79 year old dad has decided to only do indoor bike riding as a Spinning instructor. The frame size of the blue bike is to big for me so the Dura Ace groupe set is now part of a build with a CAAD 10 frame.
Did I say good bye to the blue frame. No of course not
