You could use ftp detection to update your ftp. See the thread below how to use ftp detection
Updating your FTP input isn’t going to give you the same thing but harder. It will gives you more varied workouts that are of roughly equivalent difficulty.
When you increase FTP, you drop PL so that the net absolute difficulty is roughly constant. But now you have more varied workouts AT can select from.
Unless you tell it to back off through a struggle survey or swap continuously to lower workout level alternates, it will keep trying to progress you. But a simple, honest struggle - which should still be productive workouts - will tell the system you’ve had enough and it will back off.
We need to get out of the mindset that increasing FTP increases/decreases workout difficulty with AT. Decreasing FTP will decrease workout difficulty for those scheduled by AT, because your PL will stay constant. Increasing FTP leads to the PL going down such that difficulty remains flat (with some exceptions here or there).
I see FTP updates as an important part of AT. If your FTP is increasing, your power zones are changing. For example if you get fitter, the VO2Max workouts become more like Threshold workouts. If that is the case AT can no longer track your improvement in that zone accurately, and you are not working the right zones any more.
So please everyone keep your FTP accurate.
Thanks for replying. Perhaps I should instead join the thread complaining about the ramp test. I already manually bumped nearly 5%. I’ll give the AI estimate a go next time though I expect it is conservative in the gain (and wouldn’t have given the 5%). I’ve done SS in the past at a level that was just crushing. That admittedly does make me cautious of over-working. I had to take extended breaks over last summer to deal with back problems, which is a second reason to be cautious now.
SS is the block I most complete on the trainer, so I’ve been through it several times. As a good TR user, it would seem my SS is strong. I just want to skip some of it and move on because in my experience, it does not improve FTP, it just makes you more tolerant of it. I will say this: it’s the best weight loss program around!
You may be surprised how much the AI FTP changes your FTP - it gave me a 10w bump on top of a recent 5w increase, and definitely put it at the VERY TOP of what it might be, even possibly too high IMHO. I am currently doing a few weeks threshold work and will quickly find out if it’s over done it
