Judgement call. If you’ve never used Garmin push buttons there is a learning curve. The touchscreen 830 is easier to operate. Personally I find value in some of Garmin’s HR based machine learning algorithms, and ability to customize screens. And a few other features. So I prefer Garmin over Wahoo, Stages, Hammerhead, etc.
Does it work with thick deep winter gloves?
I’ve got a 530. Check DCRainmaker review for starters, and a quick search here.
Does the Bolt v1 not support outside workouts? I have an original Elemnt computer which supports them, so would have assumed the original Bolt does as well.
Bolt v1 works well with Outside workouts.
Contact garmin, they gave me a good discount of a new model when I had the same issue, even although it was well out of warranty
In my experience, garmin has had phenomenal customer service.
My Rally RS pedals lost the cap and battery that made the power and cadence unusable. I called the customer service and the same day they mailed out a replacement door other little parts. They sent it out with no money out of my pocket.
Yes I can push outside workouts to the Bolt V1 but the response from progression levels are binary (did I complete --yes or no). From what I understand with Garmin it can look at the ride Holistically and make adaptions. Is this correct?
Believe all outside workouts - both Wahoo and Garmin - have been pass/fail for a long time.
My thoughts, I did have a 1030 a 4 or 5 years ago but had so many problems with it not downloading rides I sold it and got s Wahoo bolt. Love the Wahoo for the fact that it just works and is easy to set up. The bolt broke, screen just went grey after 2 or 3 years so i got a Roam which after about 18 months is starting to delaminate.
The Wahoo’s Navigation is pretty average like a 1980s video game, it is better on road but terrible on the MTB in a forest in my experience. Also when MTB’ing it often reads the distance short as it keeps pausing a ride and starting and I had to switch off the beep. I mountain bike a lot so have decided to go for a 530 not the 830 due to wearing full fingered gloves when MTB’ing. Also with the intigration of Trailforks I am looking forward to using it to navige in the forest. Hopefully it donloads the rides and isn’t too buggy!
Garmin 530 been running well for 5-6 years. I’ll run it until it can’t run no more.
I had this exact same issue…contact Wahoo support and they will replace it for you. My new unit is on the way as we speak. they couldn’t have been more helpful…great customer service!
good to know. I will contact them.
The 530 was released in April 2019 ![]()
Oopsie. I meant 520 ![]()
They are sending me a new one, thanks for the advice!
Had an 830, gave it to my boss b/c my 55 year old eyeballs couldn’t see the screen during bouncy gravel rides. got the 1030, had nothing but problems with it (touch screen had a mind of its own, often failed to charge, navigation froze up at start of a gravel race, generally unreliable). Gave that one to boss’s dad and got the Roam. Works flawlessly so far, love the fact that you can zoom the data screen in/out (lets you prioritize the data fields), clear/positive on/off and charging status (Garmin would “go to sleep”, but still drained the battery; get ready for a ride, turn it on and it’s at 1 percent). Will never use a Garmin product again. Read where an Garmin customer service rep on the phone told a magazine editor “we expect our products to last 6 months”. No thanks.
I’ve never had my 1030 fail to charge and I am always careful that its switched of properly and not just asleep but that quote sums up the touch screen, even when locked it has a mind of its own! I don’t use mine for gravel bike racing navigation but I think I’ve had to reset its navigation (hold all buttons for 3s) on relaxed gravel rides, so it wouldn’t surprise me that it failed to cope in races ![]()
yeah, I finally got nav to work 20 miles into the race, but had no data (distance, speed, watts etc). that was the final straw
Yeah, I had a similar experience with an 830. It would sometimes work just fine, but I frequently had issues with the touchscreen. The live tracking had a 50/50 track record some weeks, while other weeks it worked flawlessly. I also found the constant notifications about random FirstBeat statistics to be pretty distracting.
I sold it and got a Roam and the worst thing I can say about it is that it’s kinda boring. It doesn’t have all the spiffy (but frequently annoying and unnecessary) features the Garmin does, but the whole thing just works every time. It always goes into sleep mode as it should, so there are no dead battery surprises.
I use navigation pretty extensively and ordered a Karoo 2 to give it a try because of how good the navigation is supposed to be, but I’m not super optimistic about it.
