Garmin Estimates FTP?

But, this one is only real time is it not?

I read the @dcrainmaker review and it’s certainly very interesting. I almost downloaded it just to be nosey and give it a test but a) I don’t currently have any motivation for a max effort, and b) probably don’t need another FTP.

What I want is for some means of picking one (TR FTP setting, eFTP from Intervals, or detected FTP from Garmin) and getting it to update the setting in all the places.

I’ve found the Garmin FTP estimation pretty darn close (assuming good/clean power meter data is fed into it).

For example, the most recent TR AI FTP value from last week I’ve got is 294w. The most recent Garmin value from last week is 295w. Xert has me at 308w, but I’m not sure if it’s deconflicting my multiple recordings or not (both TR and Garmin do).

I’ve found the exact same (though haven’t tried Xert) recently.

I mean to test out more of the HRV / sub maximal FTP detection by recording low intensity rides on my 530.

I’ve been trying to see if there is a ftp detection field in the fit files per a recent thread on Intervals ICU.

What I mean. Is it only something you can see during the ride?

same here. reported this before most estimates are conservative and below a 20-min effort. A month ago I did a 20-min hard effort, and Garmin used 95% and estimated ftp at 273. The other 530 estimates do not use 95%, and over the past year are in 257-267 range. A few of the most recent Garmin 530 estimates that I’ve logged in WKO:

Xertonline website put that 20-min effort at 265W :man_shrugging: but Xert fits a curve lopsided to short power which overestimates my anaerobic power (W’) and underestimates my TP.

In my experience, WKO does the best job fitting a curve to actual power data.

In my experience, Garmin does a really nice job without maximal efforts.

Yesterday Strava feed had this pic from a 1030:

posted by the head donut of the Cycling Donut Warriors club.

He doesn’t wear an HRM. Max power for the ride - 494W - and this z2 looking group ride power:

After some fun in the Strava comments section

we concluded this 40 something year old dad is about to land a pro contract

I want his Garmin!

 used Ai ftp detection yesterday morning and after this mornings workout, garmin gave me an estimate too.

How are people getting numbers so close from Garmin? I’ve always had my Garmin record every single TR workout I do and it’s always come back quite a bit lower than my AI FTP detection. Currently TR and AI FTP has me at 267, where Garmin says mine is 226.

Is it perhaps stuck and I need to “reset” it?

What sort of workouts are you doing on TR (zone and PL)? If you’re spending extended time riding at ~260W you’d expect to see something in that range on Garmin.

Are you using an HRM?

That happens to me also, it depends the workout and effort. I’ve had estimates 10-20 watts lower and the rare case of it being higher but then sometimes it’s spot on. I really don’t know but this mornings estimate was so close to what the algorithm gave me yesterday I thought I’d share it.

I had to laugh because a few days ago, my Garmin 1030+ told me that I had a new FTP. It was 945w, 12w/kg! Impressive, even more so because I am 62 years of age. Garmin had rebooted in the midst of my ride. I texted my wife after the new FTP that INEOS had called but I could not answer. She said that she would check home voicemail just in case Egan left a message. LOL!

I forget what my Garmin 1030 gave me, I switched it off after it kept on popping up post chaingang (paceline) when I was going hard enough to trigger it but not going flat out

Im doing the polarized plan (build) right now. So 1x Vo2 and 1x Threshold. The intervals aren’t long at the moment so I’m betting that the workouts aren’t triggering the Garmin algorithm correctly??

Yes, HRM everytime.

It’s interesting for sure. I just thought Garmins calculations were different and I never really cared or thought anything of it.

I always thought it would be nice if it was at least close and then my Garmin zones and IF (etc) would be closer…

You can ignore the Garmin ftp estimates, and simply manually input your ftp and zones. My ftp and IF and TSS and everything else lines up between my Edge 530 / 840 and analytics (WKO, TrainingPeaks, TrainerRoad, etc.).

That is the very reason of the unreal FTP. See eg. Reply to AravilarE , ref. https://forums.garmin.com/sports-fitness/cycling/f/edge-530/316888/edge-530-training-effect-reset-after-crash - Edge 530 - Cycling - Garmin Forums
