Thanks, and also thanks @TonyLPowell
I ask because the stated problem of “gasping” I think probably means he’s making more lactate than your aerobic system can use / your body can handle. It’s not struggling to get oxygen in but rather to get byproducts out.
So if that’s it–i.e., strong high-end power / glycolitic system with weaker aerobic system–it seems like any short-power test that extrapolates to sustainable power (i.e., FTP) should suffer from the same issues as the ramp test.
Sounds like it’s time for an hour of power
I thought gasping was just part of any FTP test.
True that. But with 8 minute, I felt paced, whereas with ramp my legs felt fine but my weak lungs and mind couldn’t hack it.
It looks like you have found a sort of solution for the testing bit now, but how about doing another type of build this time to make you more adept at vo2 work? It looks to me like you have focused on the steady state build programs, probably for good reason, but sometimes it can be wise to change it up a bit. Try short power build this cycle
that’s exactly my plan although I haven’t actually done a build yet, only base. I’m looking forward (well, sort of!) to learning how to do quality VO2 work!
I ended up setting my FTP a bit below the intervals.icu recommendation of 231 to 228. Today I completed Antelope (5x10 at SS). I looked back at this workout when I completed it in February. My ave. HR for each interval was within about 1 beat from then to now, so I’m thinking the 228 value should be pretty spot on?
Quick follow up. Did the 8 minute FTP test inside today and got 2% higher than last Monday’s ramp test. Weather looks like it’s clearing up after today so back to outside workouts.
interesting, 2% seems kinda of within the margin of error. What do you think?
Not sure what to think. Had to replace the battery in the PM a couple of days ago, so there’s that as well.
It seems like it’s always something with me and these assessments. Just gonna plug away on LV2 and do the work. I do know that after doing 3 assessments in the last 11 days, I’ve had my fill of them for a while.
