I developed Plantar Fasciitis in my right foot. My orthopedic doctor and I think it might be caused by toe scrunching. 2 well know fitters tend to agree. Lifting my heel while pedaling. As per the fitters recommendation, I should switch to flat pedals for a short while. This should help me fix my pedal stroke without having to think about it 100% of the time.
Has anyone purchased the $20.00 cheapo pedals on Amazon ? I’m more worried about crank arm damage from short threads or miss shaped threads. Most rides will be short rides of little intensity outside and on the trainer.
Thanks
It’s not worth the risk. Get the cheapest set of Stamps, Chesters, etc. you can find.
Flat pedals are great for metatarsal pain. I’d be interested to hear if they help with your plantar fasciitis. A way to solve plantar fascitis, in many cases, is to massage the foot muscles with a lacrosse ball. See the awesome Kelly Starrett: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rsYLsjXVLR8
I have these pedals on a fat bike. Surprisingly good
I had a set a few years back.
They seemed fine in an old steel altus? set but one day I had a bright idea to stick them into Ultegra and very nearly wrecked the threads on my crank. The thread had something of a flat spot so had I cranked it down and harder it would have screwed the alloy.

I bought a pair of Wolf Tooth Waveforms at Sea Otter and only now did my first long ride with them. I gotta say that they are really good. Combined with a pair of Five Ten Freeriders I can get almost 3/4 of a pedal stroke out of them. Just lacking that little bit between 8 & 12, but otherwise they were great. Well worth the money spent on the combo.
Just no. Quality flat pedals are not much more expensive and just tons better. For my wife’s bike I got a pair of Shimanos for 30 €. They are not MTB-style pedals with long pins and such, but they have a solid aluminum body and good bearings (so far zero issues).
If you want something with more bite, look at MTB-style flat pedals. With many you can remove the pins (which are actually screws). The pins will chew up your sole. One popular choice are Crankbrothers’ stamp line of pedals, which are currently on sale for 25 € in some pretty funky and varied colors.
Thanks for all the replies
I’m going with name brand pedals and my cushy running shoes.
It’s a temp fix until my plantar fasciitis is better.
Doctor says I’m good to ride but no power and no volume for a while.
It’s been raining for days. Lots of time to watch the tour instead of riding.
I have tried a few different pedals and ended up back on Chester pedals. And I do very aggressively mountain biking.
