But if you don’t mate the shifters to a FD, they just wouldn’t do anything, so you could run it as a 1x11, I think.

You can, I’ve done it on a hill climb bike.
Though I was responding to this:

You need both shifters, to move up and down, otherwise you would just go up, OR down.

It’s just that easy. You don’t even need to swap the freehub if you already have an XDR hub for AXS 12 speed. I can swap between an axs 10-33 road cassette and eagle 10-50 cassette on my gravel bike.

All it takes to switch between XDR freehub and XD (the MTB standard) is a .8mm spacer behind the cassette.

If you are ever buying a new freehub to make your wheel compatible with SRAM XD or XDR cassettes (with 10 tooth cogs), always opt for the XDR version if it’s an option. You can always put an XD compatible cassette on an XDR freehub with the spacer, but you can’t put an XDR compatible cassette on an XD freehub.

You could just go into the axs app and change the button mapping every time you wanted to shift… Probably not the best long term user friendly solution.

Not in etap 11 speed though.

Maybe worth considering for a UK hill climb bike though, although 2 blip shifters and TT levers on bullhorn bars is probably the best solution for that.

Maybe my very limited research about 12 speed Eagle on an 11 speed is wrong then. Your post makes it look as if Eagle 12 speed is also 12 speed only versus what @OldNewGuy is after in using 12 speed derailleur with 11 speed cassette.

I can’t speak for using eagle cassette (12 speed) with on an 11 speed system, was just saying that making an 11 speed road wheel compatible with an eagle cassette is as simple as swapping in an XD or XDR freehub (if one if available for the hub).

Is there a simple way to look at my wheels (older Ksyrium Elite) to determine whether a 12 speed cassette is possible?

With etap 12, no it will not.
12 speed will require a new freehub for sure
And there may or may not be the part for your wheelset.

You need to look on Mavic website or the googles and check.
My Reynolds attack do not have a part available because they are 2012, but there is a freehub for the 2014 version of the same wheel.

So it all will depend on the year it was made.

Take the cassette off and look at the freehub (or post a pic in here). My understanding - but there are guys here with much more knowledge in this area than me - is that it needs to be a Mavic ID360 freehub to take 12 speed.

BUT I also think an Eagle cassette, as long as the smallest cog is 11T, will fit on a standard HG hub. Can anyone else (@grwoolf @acliffalay ) confirm that?

yep, the eagle NX cassette doesn’t require an XD driver. There are several other “aftermarket” 12 speed cassette options out there (rotor, sunrace, ethirteen, etc.). I’ve never monkeyed with them, but I’ve read that some are very good. I’d bet there are options that don’t require XD or XDR (but probably don’t have a 10 tooth cog).

Thanks everyone - I’ll take a look.
