eTap questions for older frame

For all parts? I have been unable to find that price online at this point or even a new red etap that is in stock.

I’d be curious to know how if @Power13 meant it. The spacing is different on the cassettes and the AXS chain is narrower. The AXS rear derailleur cannot like having to deal with an 11 speed cassette.

TT bike; Crit/winter Bike; Fancy carbon bike; CX bike; Track Bike; Classic Steel bike; Pub bike.
Isn’t that the correct number to have?

No, the correct number is N+1, where N is the number you currently have :grinning:

just rear derailleur…
need to buy shifters (probably 2 if you want them to match) and cassette.

I seem to remember seeing some time ago that shimano cranks sometimes foul one of the limit screws on the front mech. It can be solved though by filing/griding the offending screw down. By the way I love the idea of modernising an old frame which you like and fits you. Better than it ending up in landfill or selling it to someone for a song.

Can’t really use eTap with just the one shifter…

oh…
I though you could with 1x11 setup…

I haven’t mentioned the bike I have stashed in France, or the frameset sat in my friend’s house…

@OldNewGuy @Trippy - Sorry, I was referring to 11spd eTap, not 12spd AXS stuff.

Apologize for any confusion.

You need left shifter to move up the cassette, and right shifter to move down the cassette.
Single button on each shifter.

Press both to shift the front derailleur from whereever it is.

I’ve actually set up my Shimano di2 in a similar way because I like the eTap shifting logic so much.
Left large paddle to shift up, right large paddle to shift down, and I use the smaller buttons for moving up and down the front derailleur. I use the hidden thumb buttons on the top to control the rear derailleur, along with the sprint shifters doing the same.

Does the non-AXS etap stuff allow the ability to dictate shifting behavior i.e. the Sequential vs Compensating choices?

My understanding (albeit implied, and on the basis of a fairly short conversation) was that the 11sp stuff will retain a rim brake option.

No. There is a USB dongle thing that you could potentially use to update settings with OG eTap 11 speed, but never needed to use it for anything.

There is an app for AXS only features. Also funky things I’ll likely never use, like using blip shifters for activating a AXS wireless dropper post.

From what I recall the dongle is software updates only. Nothing shows up on the PC when you plug it in. Far as I know there haven’t been updates in a really long time and I’ve only plugged it in once.

Having said that, 11 speed eTap is simply just the bare minimum system to shift.

Is the Red AXS 12 speed only or could its brifters and derailleur be used with an 11 speed cassette?

The Sequential shift thing isn’t a must have but it’d be cool to have.

True, its basic, but it does just work.
I haven’t used or felt the need for Shimano di2 syncho shift either.

Don’t want the front derailleur to move without my specific instructions!

Yeah I hear that. Still it’d be fun/interesting to try.

12 only throughout from everything I’ve read about AXS. They had to change the cassette spacing to fit the 12 speed in an 11 speed envelope. I don’t know that the tooth profile changed but the width did. This means the rear derailleur will not line properly in every gear selection. The 11 speed chainrings also won’t work due to the width per statements from different manufacturers. I don’t know that the 11 speed shifters would work with 12 speed derailleurs or vice versa, my guess would be no.

There is a way to make the Eagle 12 speed stuff work with 11 speed from the little I read but it’s not something I use on any bicycles to really care to dive into it. I think it’s along the lines of Eagle retains the spacing of 11 speed whereas AXS needed to make stuff thinner. My guess would be building a rear wheel to fit Eagle 12 speed on a road bike isn’t as easy as changing out the freehub.
