That is exactly what I was thinking as well. I don’t have anything narrower than a 24 internal, so I really don’t have a great way to test this theory.
I’ve looked close at Dylan’s setup and I am pretty sure he has shaved off some of the tread, so maybe that is something I need to look into trying.
I have this combo in 2.25" on my mountain bike that I use as a commuter. The tires are amazing. They work extremely well on tarmac, and despite having used them for close to a year, even the rear tire is in very good nick even though they spent most of their time on asphalt.
That’s very helpful. I just did an 85 mile, 10k elevation, gravel race on 40mm tires and I’m kind of scarred from the experience (especially on the descents). A lot of people rode mountain bikes on it due to the chunkiness, and I’m trying to figure out what kind of tires I might try for next year.
thank you for the feedback. I have been running thunder burt on my Blur as rear but 2.35 and haven’t had any issues with it yet. I’m running the super race version
I think I am going to go back to the Terra Speed in 45mm for the time being. I don’t have any races on the calendar and the local roads are pretty tame/it takes me about 10 miles before I even hit gravel. I don’t think I am going to buy any new tires for a while, I am hoping that we may have some new options by next spring. I would love a 2.0 conti raceking with the fast casing or even a 50mm terra speed.
Yeah the punctures have been surprising to me. I ran Thunderburts on my Epic Evo for a while and never had a single issue. Two of the punctures on the Mog looked to be sharp rocks in the middle of the tire and then I found a giant thorn when I took them off.
Did you notice much wear on the fork and/or rear seat tube from when rocks are getting squeezed through due to the tight clearance? I ran over spec tires on my Emonda road bike and has a lot of wear on the underside of the fork.
The punctures on the TB’s is a bit concerning but knowing the sealant took care of it is also good news. I had run Thunderburts in the past on my XC bike with good success and no punctures, including at Leadville. Last year I ran 2.2 Race Kings and did flat at Leadville on both tires, including a nasty flat due to a side knob tearing off. May just be bad luck, but now debating between RK’s or 2.35 TBs on the XC bike for courses like Leadville.
No marks on the seat tube but I do have a couple on the top of the fork. Also have a few on the inside of the chain stays. I have nearly 5,000 miles on the Mog now, I’d be shocked if I didn’t have any marks on the bike by now.
Maybe I got unlucky with my Thunderburt, its only the rear that has had any issues. Maybe I will remount them in the future and swap front to the back to see if I still get punctures.
My remaining gravel race this year is significantly smoother, so I think I’ll stick with my 40mm Pirelli Ms. May give the thunder burts a shot if I end up needing something beefier.
