I haven’t finished reading the entire article, but from what I have read it is entirely useless research.
All of the various names, fatigue resistance, durability, are just different ways to describe endurance. Merriam Webster dictionary literally has durability as a synonym for endurance. The person who can endure burning 2000 calories on a bike the greatest will have more power after burning said calories. The research amounts to saying “participants of an endurance sport who have the best endurance are the most successful”.
As such, the research is not only pointless for women, it is pointless for men.
Yes, and that is exactly why it is more difficult to study. They are also entirely different research questions. E.g., “Does the menstrual cycle affect female cyclists durability?” It would require entirely different data that the authors potentially did not have access to.
This isn’t entirely true. The very reason why you want them to study it - there are additional variables that might affect a woman’s “durability” - is the reason why it is more complicated than gathering the same data. As @russell.r.sage pointed out, things like the menstrual cycle might change the results.
Does that mean they shouldn’t have done the additional data gathering to analyze the results? No. However, I still maintain that the results are meaningless. All else equal, if you can put out more power than your opponents at the critical points the race you will do better than them.
Hard disagree. If I were to coach some guys I’d like to know:

2 thresholds
10 MMP (or another relevant duration) after 2,3,4,5 000 kj
I have posted this article at a couple times before and I think its really informative on this topic. Its about a 4 year plan to get a talented young rider to the world tour. The main focus was on improving endurance/durability/fatigue resistance or what ever else you want to call it. This is because the coach (and I imagine every other coach) had identified key performance metrics looking at WT riders and races:
"[coach speaking] To start, I would quantify the outcome first, and then work backwards to figure out how to get there in relation to where we were. I came up with a few key figures, collated from commonalities in data from a bunch of different athletes:
- 20 minutes at 5.5 to 5.8 W/Kg after 3000 kJ was a minimum for a top-10 on a summit finish
- 4 hours at 4 W/Kg with less than five percent heart rate drift is a gold standard for general aerobic capacity at the U23 European level …"
The “plan” in large part involved training to meet those (and other) targets and included stuff like:

Yes, the key is to individualize the fatigue protocol to the skills and development stage of the rider.

That 37 minute estimate to get to the end of the article is mostly time spent trying to figure out what your best power is after 2500 kj then sitting stunned silence when you realize for all the work you’ve done over the years, you’ve never done even one serious 20 minute effort after burning 2500 kj.

A big difference between today-me and 5-years-ago me isn’t how fast I can get up a long hill, it’s that 5 years ago when I had a much higher training volume in every way, I could repeat a 90% power effort of that hill climb 10 times in a row, not just once or twice.
Similar to when 80kg amateurs say they could beat Kittel or Cavendish up a mountain. No, you can’t. Not if you factor in the grand tour they’re riding vs your fresh-legged one-and-done attempt. They could match your time then do it again and again.
Durability is brilliant. I very much miss it.
Unless you have WKO, and then it is spent comparing different seasons. And the mind starts furiously planning on when to incorporate some late efforts to close the gap between the “after 1000kJ” and “after 1500kJ” charts. Those are the average Joe charts ![]()
A useful generic test, maybe yearly or 2 per year:
- 20min warmup of choice
- 10 min full gas
- Ride 2-3-4 hours at LT1, Tempo, SST, Threshold.
- 10 min full Gas
Compare the 2 10m effort and overtime try to get the ratio as close as possible to 1

Just went searching in training peaks to see if I did any rides of 2500+ kjs. I found one! And at the end I tried blowing up the group I was with so did a 25 minute effort at 3 w/kg (NP) at the end of it. Did manage a 5 minute effort right at the end with an AP/NP at 4 w/kg.
Decidedly not pro…
intervals - how do you do that? Because I can filter rides with work > 1000 or 1500 or … But the power curve is for the entire ride, and not the portion of the ride after 1000 or 1500 or …
I also have to admit that the amount of 2500kj+ rides I do per year is pretty limited ![]()
I’m old too. Not feeble. But light….I did 25+ rides last year >= 2500 kj. It was a tough year, I only managed to train 350h.
Idk how a big guy like you with 280w FTP and training 8-10h week doesn’t have more bigger rides. No judgement, just wondering about training philosophies.
In TrainingPeaks, you can find high kj rides by searching your rides using the magnifying class icon on the calendar then then sorting them by kj or calories by clicking on the appropriate column header. If kj is not shown, you can add it by clicking on 3 little lines at the top of the results.
Work exists in a continuum. Power in this case is descriptive, just an output, measuring your abilities in the moment.
Last year I did 4 rides > 2500kJ. Mostly because I’m married to my wife, not my bike. And I do all the maintenance on our house. And we have 1 car on the weekend (wife’s work car is technically unavailable). Going for consistency on the 8+ hours per week train. Guess that makes me old, feeble, and lazy
and unlikely to win any masters 55+ races.
