Do I need to replace my hookless wheels?

I currently have a set of Syncros Capital 1.0s 40mm wheels. I have no issues with them and like them a lot. I didn’t go out of my way to buy them though, they just came with my bike when I purchased it back in May. I didn’t really have too much of an issue with the hookless situation since I don’t feel I’m pushing the pressure limits. I’m typically riding around on 30mm at 52psi.

That being said, as always, something sparks a flame and the uproar of anti-hookless for road pops up (most recently Silca going on the attack), and it gives me all the feels. It makes me believe I’m riding around just waiting for a catastrophic event lol.

Am I being paranoid (most likely), or should I really look into swapping them out for a hooked wheel?

Thanks!

Do I think hookless is mainly a cost cutting exercise by wheel makers? Yes.
Have I ridden thousands of miles on hookless rims and never had an issue? Also Yes.
Do I think they are unsafe? No.

Personally - I have 0 issues with hookless. Especially if you are going 30mm and wider and with lower pressures. I think the anti hookless crowd is just the vocal minority and hate on things just for the sake of hating on it. How many people who come into comments are claim an anti hookless stance have personally experienced an issue? My guess is few..

I would NOT sell these wheels just cuz they are hookless. They look like amazing wheels.

I’m pretty anti-hookless

However…

“I’m typically riding around on 30mm at 52psi.”

Your good to go - I’d be perfectly happy riding those :+1:

No, you are educated and will take proper precautions. I agree whole heartedly with @tiptoppenguin , they said it better than I could.

I ride 32 mm tires on hookless road rims. I liked the price point and am educated on the risks. I generally go with 35 and 40 PSI to reduce the chip seal buzz, the “Do you want to die?” crowd is just a bit loud right now, just let them find the next thing to get mad about.

Even Josh had to walk back his statements in a recent video. He shared his concerns about tire size and his rule of 105%, he is most concerned about the road racer who is pumping to 72 PSI+, having heat or elevation increase PSI, and running tires with less than 5 MM of the internal width of the rim. So an IW of 23 and Tire size of 25.

I did hear a argument recently that its the uninformed new rider that everyone is concerned about. Who get their hookless wheels with a bike purchase, grab non conforming tires, pump too high, and go ride and have a catastrophe. Its a fair point, but that isn’t you… anymore.

I am happy with my rims and will sleep well at night with my setup. I am more likely to crash out running into a curb or doing something dumb.

Thanks for the input, everyone.

Whilst I would never advise to buy hookless, in this case you already have them.

Ontop of that, youve had no negative experiences and enjoy using them.

Dont waste your money & keep them, using them within the manufacturers guidance and you’re going to be fine. With regards to a unexpected catastrophic event, this is cycling & typically TR user orientated, probably very fast cycling so unexpected catastrophic events are part & parcel of the sport with many components.

Isn’t that an unfortunate truth. Thanks for your input!
