Dangerous Drivers

I agree. If you had an accident with your gun and killed somebody then you would be charged with manslaughter. Not sure why vehicles are treated differently.

I can’t belive this to be true on a civilized country? Police could do nothing? The car always has a registered responsible person even if it is rented. Unless someone robbed it the responsable for its use is the owner or who rented it. It could not be him driving but he must know ho did it and therefor should be held accountable.

That’s similar to walking down the street right? Or even riding a bike?
Last time I checked they were both considered basic tasks.

It’s fine by me if you don’t agree. I get why everyone wants to bitch about drivers.
I’ve kicked in several doors and ripped off a couple of mirrors over the years. I’m no saint.

Automated systems in cars are pretty good and are definitely a step forward. Separation between the cyclists and cars would be a better option IMO.

Kinetic energy being proportional to mass and to the square of velocity, the consequences are not exactly the same between walking at 5 km/h and driving a ton and a half at 60. Try hitting a lamppost in both cases, for example.

“Civilized” countries are chock full of the unbelievable.

Years ago in my community, a driver in a pick-up truck hit a cyclist so hard the rider ended up in the box of the truck where he died without the driver knowing he was back there. The driver was never charged because he and the passenger both claimed they were the driver of the vehicle at the time of the accident (gotta love lawyers). Courts couldn’t prove who was driving, therefore no one was driving. But if no one was driving, then who killed the cyclist? :man_shrugging:

Gotta wonder just how many “driverless” vehicles the legal system creates.

Just to lighten the mood…

I so much feel like doing this, so often…

None of them could be charged has the driver but both should have been found guilty at least as an accumplice. They shouldn’t get away with murder.

Thank god. Gotta say, insulting drivers for avoiding physical confrontation seems like a pretty bad move considering how vulnerable we are. Let’s hope they stay cowards and so will I.

Well, you’ve sort of hit on a defining point here.

Drivers generally are cowards when it comes to risking their own safety. Many/most have absolutely no qualms whatsoever about confrontations or creating/exacerbating incidents that put OTHER peoples lives at risk. This of course leads to things like people buying massive, armored SUVs for ‘safety’ reasons, even though it creates a less safe environment for literally every single other person on the planet, save the owner and people who ride with them.

Then the two of them should have been charged both with manslaughter and lying under oath, if they wanted to turn the trial into a package deal.

It seems indisputable that one ran over a person, and the other lied about it.

It’s funny that when a death occurs during the commission of a crime involving a firearm, various circumstances come into play to extend the number of parties who can be charged with murder. In the case where a person not in a motor vehicle is struck and killed by a vehicle, the opposite generally seems to be the case.

Perhaps what’s needed (in the US, anyway) is a constitutional amendment protecting ownership and operation of motor vehicles. Then maybe people will begin more earnestly protesting deaths caused by careless drivers. /sarc (sort of)…

Lol. Then we’ll have whole groups of people starting backwoods cults, buying up SUVs for ‘protection.’

The types of tasks you’re doing while walking are similar but the volume of information you have to process is very different as well as the time available. Humans didn’t evolve to travel at those speeds and various tricks are present to make it seem more normal. The one which comes to mind is dashed roadway lines on a highway - those dashes are much longer than you’d think such that it makes it seem (to your brain) that you’re going slower than you actually are.

I’d say that’s true if the footpath was largely empty and in good condition. Add a little pedestrian traffic and something as simple as a half inch step at a join in the pavement. Splat!
Maybe I shouldn’t have used the word ‘basic’ earlier. All three tasks can become quite complex as you add more obstacles.

At the end of the day roads are there for the transport of people and goods. That’s why they build them.
Most of the roads I’ve driven on are really only designed for cars/trucks. Quite a few roads don’t even cater for pedestrians until the pedestrian traffic is high enough to warrant a footpath.
It sucks but that’s life.

Stay safe on the roads!
Separate bike lanes and cycleways for the win!:+1:

Today’s comedy of errors:

On the commute to work today…some guy runs a stop sign at a 4-way, proceeds to turn left into my lane (aka oncoming traffic) and then gives me the finger…y’know, cuz I was in the wrong by being on a bike. :face_with_raised_eyebrow:

On the commute from work today…a truck runs a red light for motorists/green for cyclists, turning left across the bike lane. The light turns green for cars but the truck on the line doesn’t move. I sez to the driver, “The light’s green, you can go”. He sez to me, 'Oh, geez! Sorry, I was sleeping!".

Anyone know where I can lease a tank?

Crazy people = even crazyer drivers!

I assume you’d prefer one with live ammo?

Mmmmmaybe. First I’ll see how satisfying the unpredictable lane swerving is.
But just in case, how soon do I have to order to get it by Christmas? :stuck_out_tongue:

And now for Friday’s Fxcked-up Driver Report:

Stopped at a red light, first in line, no vehicles behind me. Then a super sh!tty pick-up truck comes clanking up behind me, pulls into the oncoming traffic lane beside me, gives me the finger and makes a left turn on the red. Stunning. The best part was that the awesome dude looked like he just came from living in the bush for the better part of the decade, and…he was wearing a hi-viz safety vest.

(As a ‘finger’ aside, I once had a guy run a stop sign and cut me off, when I waved my arm in protest he stuck his hand out the window and gave me thing finger…but it was his index finger. A few seconds later I guess he realized his error and finally flipped up the middle finger. Not sure how messed up you have to be to get The Middle Finger WRONG but you probably shouldn’t be driving!)

Have a safe weekend! :v:
