Would that be an International fathom, or rather a British Admiralty fathom?
@mcneese.chad I think GTorio has a point… Can we please turn our attention back to the metric system? I’d like to debate which meter is the real meter. The original platinum bar representing 1/10,000,000 the distance from North Pole to Equator, with the line being drawn thru Paris of course. That was good enough in 1792, why not now? What happened to cadium atom or mercury or krypton interferometry? Are we really suppose to rest easy now that the meter is defined by the speed of light?
Lets all pause now, take a deep breath, pull out or Helium Neon lasers, and modulate the light with microwaves in a vacuum chamber in order to measure the length that light travels in 1/299,792,458 of a second. The empire and its imperial distance ain’t got nothing on the force and speed of light!
I put 38psi in my 35mm tyres
I will take that platinum bar and raise you two farthings and a psi.
New marketing slogan:
“Mountain biking: at least we’re consistent!”
There are way too many nerds here
Needs more guns
We could start to measure everything in multiples of 21 cm, the “wavelength” of hydrogen, as depicted on the Golden Records on the Pioneer and Voyager spacecraft.
The spin-flip transition of a hydrogen atom’s electron has a frequency of about 1420.405 MHz, which corresponds to a period of 0.704 ns. Light at this frequency has a vacuum wavelength of 21.106 centimetres (8.309 in) (which is also the distance the light travels in that time period). Below the symbol, the small vertical line—representing the binary digit 1—specifies a unit of length (21 cm) as well as a unit of time (0.7 ns). Both units are used as measurements in the other symbols.
I think we will need to start measuring frame sizes in fractions of large boulders
Of course if the aliens came across this thread they definitely would not want to talk to us.
Struck a nerve I see. Lmao…
Here’s an actual cycling meme, just for a change:
I know you’re having fun, but just to be clear the origin story of the meter is in no way the point; it’s about it’s relationship with other units of measurement in the system being consistent and easy to work with.
Ok. I’ll be the one. Can someone please start a “why the metric system is the coolest and I’m willing to fight you over this” thread so we can get back to memes?
