I had my chain drop recently and felt it bind when started to pedal after shifting back to the big ring. Thankfully, I was just soft pedaling at the time. The chips are through the black base paint layer and though some darker gray layer that I am unsure what it is. There is a bit a what is certainly carbon peeking though on the larger chip.
LBS says that it is probably just cosmetic and to keep riding, but listen for sounds and occasionally inspect it for changes. I wanted to throw the image out here for comment, as well.
