Because the 25% premium isn’t selective and I can’t see anyone paying it to support those that oppose the tariffs. There’s no opt out. Those businesses are basically collateral damage
It’s just the way things work these days. If we don’t like the way a person, a company, a country is acting, we just cancel the whole thing. There is no grey area for most of the population, it’s black or white.
Dropping TR would be the hardest since there really isn’t an alternative that even competes. That said I promised my kid I buy them a ‘real’ bike this spring for mtb on Saturday mornings - I was going to pick up a RipRock20 but now I’ll be looking at Devinci or Rocky for some options
It seems for the time being only tires, tubes, and rim tape are affected but I don’t want to have to eat any costs I don’t need to.
If anyone else knows of Canadian bike manufacturers that make a great kids rigid mtb I’m all ears.
So if you can afford the tariff, good for you, but the tariffs will negatively effect both economies and also effect international relations. There are treaties involved that trump just tore up. Do that enough and America is a pariah and no one will trust or defend it.
So the TR monthly cost is going up 25% too?
Actually you are correct. I was thinking of two companies providing the same thing, subject to a tariff. However in a more general sense, buying from the country imposing them still spends money that country’s economy. On an economic individual basis it’s on principle, collectively it can have a real monetary impact and the wider the impact, the more pressure is put on the government to do something to alleviate the pain.
To the OP, as an American I salute for boycotting stuff from the US given the tariff BS. I hope all Canadians boycott US products over this as a FU
Several provinces are already tossing American alcohol and applying tariffs, and hiking toll fees. I think some have mentioned 100% tariffs on Tesla’s. But I think this is all too little too late.
While Canadians might think it’s a good idea, the 100% on Teslas is not part of the official response by the Canadian government. It was said by a candidate to replace Trudeau for the Liberal Party leadership (Chrystia Freeland). While she held cabinet positions (finance minister and deputy prime minister) she resigned those posts and does not have any authority on official policy.
Ontario has a provincial election in a few weeks and a lot of people want Premier Doug Ford to cancel a $100M Starlink contract. This will become an election issue if it isn’t already.
Santa Cruz are owned by PON Holdings, who are Dutch.
Well, I only hate two things: people who are intolerant of other cultures, and the Dutch.

As a Canadian, currently planning on not going ahead with week long family vacation to Kingdom trails; likely shifting to somewhere in Quebec. Oregon Trail stage race will likely shift to local events instead ( admittedly I hadn’t fully decided on that one yet.)
I fully acknowledge this will hurt my own best interest more than anyone else; however Canadians are legitimately pretty angry ATM.
Does it have to be new? You can always look at the used bike market. Don’t know about you but I am seeing people sell their hardly ridden bikes for 40-50% of MSRP and probably get talked down further.
I fucking love Vermont! As a Canadian I have done 2 bike trips there the last 3 years and it kills me I just can’t do it until this shit is fixed
As an outraged and disgusted American, can I meet you on the border? I’d be happy to barter a pound of bacon for a bottle of maple syrup.
Unfortunately, this topic is really emotionally sensitive right now and clearly has a lot of potential to swing from the topic of bicycles into something much less productive.
As much as I know that this is an extremely important issue and one on many of our minds right now, I think it’s best to keep this off of the TR forum at least for now…
Take care everyone.
