Calibration issues tacx + MTB

A friend has an MTB and a tacx wheel on trainer. She has been unable to calibrate the trainer at all - even in the hardest gear she can’t get it to the required speed. Garmin after all sorts of trouble shooting have suggested that she get a trainer tyre. Is this likely to solve her issues or are they just fobbing her off?

Why can’t she hit the mph required? What is it, 18/19mph?

Not fobbing her off, she probably (most likely) lacks the leg strength to get up to 80rpm for 32x11. A smoother rolling tire will help lower the power needed to reach that. Put a 700c wheel on, or have one purpose built depending on skewer type, and she can probably reach it.

From what she tells me it sounds like she is spinning out without ever getting up to speed. I’m trying to help her troubleshoot from across the country so it’s hard to know for sure what the issue is.

It’s a little more work, but having her shoot a video of the calibration, including the device in view might be worthwhile.

Hate to be pedantic but really need to define spinning out. What rpm is she hitting?

If she is spinning out then it sounds like she has enough power, but maybe cadence is low. You could spin out at 70tpm or 130rpm. For 32x11 she needs to hit 80rpm for roughly 19mph on a 29er.

Great suggestion.

All great questions! I don’t know the answers. I have sent her the link to this thread so she can decide what she’d like to do next.
