BWR California 2026

Alright, who’s in? I’m doing the Dubbel Header, 100mi road gran fondo on Saturday and the BWR Waffle on Sunday. Going to be a killer. Still undecided on what bike and tires I’m going to run. I can fit 35s so I’m leaning towards Pirelli PZero Race RS in 35 or the new GP5K S TR in 35 if they’re out in time.

Tentative routes (?):

My goals are more modest. I just signed up for the Wafer on Sunday.

This will be my first gravel race. I will be nowhere near the front, even for my age group. (I’ll be 62 years old.) My main goals are to finish smiling and to learn as much as I can from this first event. I have, though, been training consistently, having a very good experience and hitting new power and PR numbers with the new TrainerRoad AI-selected workouts, and reading and watching everything I can about riding and racing gravel.

I’d be delighted to read anything people would like to write about the particulars of this event, or this funny gravel thing in general.

From what I’ve read, rumors at least, is that the route should be very doable on a road bike. Just rumors so far, they haven’t released a route. Probably more fun and comfortable on a gravel bike though.

I only rode it 2 years ago on 5000 All-season 35s. I had more rim and rock strikes on that ride than the rest of the bikes 4-year life. No flats, but the chances of flatting on S TRs would have been too high (for me.). I was running them pretty high at around 40-45. Maybe this new course has fewer of those unavoidable embedded rocks on the trail.

Going through Boden Canyon it appears.

If it’s using Boden Canyon, I’m not sure a road bike will be the best option.
