Best smart watch for cycling if I will also use a Garmin head unit

Curious why you even bother with wheel speed? I’m otherwise the same as you. Wahoo, Favero, AW Ultra, and Polar HRM.

The AW Ultra and Polar HRM make running seamless using the standard workout app on watch. Spotify can stream offline if I don’t want to bring my phone (no cell connection needed) though i usually do bring it because its not that big of a hassle.

Wahoo + Polar HRM with the Favero works great on the bike for all the stats I need. There have been a few instances where I need to remove the battery on the Polar and put it back in to get it to ‘wake up’ which can be a bit of a pain.

In the past I wrote Favero Power data to AWU with no HRM and tried to use that as a cycling computer. I’d been using Strava as my data broker and until recently, Apple Health wouldnt write power data to strava so it didnt work.

The wheelspeed sensor was a left over from my old trainer mule (the Pinarello Galileo with the 4Seasons). I originally started on a dumb trainer, and I needed the rear wheelspeed sensor for it all to work. I dont need it any more, the headunit does speed and distance of course, but I’ve just not removed it.

I’ve not had my Polar refuse to wake up, but I have mentally logged your statement in case it comes up in the future. I use the Polar HRM because it is sensitive enough to use with HVR (most are nowdays) and I’ve had a few run ins with arrythmia and such so I like to keep a close eye on heart variability. Since then I’ve just stuck with it.

Doesn’t sound like this is OPs reason, but I find a wheel speed sensor is pretty critical on my mountain bike.

One thing I’d add to consider is the weight of the Fenix - when I had to replace my Fenix 6 I went for the much lighter FR265 and Really appreciate it just on that basis.

A few grams here and there doesn’t look much on paper but made a big difference in my experience…

My experience was poor with amoled Epix used as a bike computer mounted to my handle bar.

The backlight turns off after a few seconds and it dims to prevent burn in. I found it hard to see during the day, and had to constantly tap the watch to wake it up.

The amoled vivioactive 5 is very like that (switching off) unless you override it in settings. DC Rainmaker has but I haven’t bothered, the battery life is dropped to 4 days or something when you do.

Yeah, I had all the alway on display settings on and brightness turned up to the max, but when it’s off your write the backlight still times out and dims

I have the 6X and Enduro 3 and both aren’t amoled so my experience with the screen is as good as with the 1040 I have.
