Best practice for outdoor ride plan

I’ve got a structured workout planned for tomorrow, but I’m aiming to do a hard outdoor ride on Friday (key high-intensity session).

From a training perspective, would you:

  • Stick with the planned workout tomorrow, or

  • Adjust it (e.g. endurance ride or short openers) to better set up Friday?

  • Plan Friday’s outdoor ride in advance and let the AI adjust Thursday automatically?

I’m trying to balance following the plan (e.g. TrainerRoad / Zwift) versus making the most of a good outdoor opportunity.

Also—if I add the planned outdoor ride into the system, will the AI automatically adapt/review tomorrow’s session based on that?

Goal is to maximise the quality of Friday, not just tick the box tomorrow.

What is your Saturday plan?

I think if Friday is a key ride for you, take it easy tomorrow. Your prediction will probably take a hit, but we ride for fun. If Saturday is off and you don’t care if Friday is optimal then leave the hard workout.

AI doesn’t adapt based on what is upcoming only by what is in the past.

You can try adding the planned ride for tomorrow and see if it adjusts. Personally if I cared about the Friday ride I’d either do an endurance ride or take the day off.

That’s what I would do. I’m not concerned with what AI thinks. If it gives me a yellow or red day, that’s its problem. I would still do my long ride and let AI do what it has to do. I use it as a general guide line. Some weeks I’m on one side of that line some weeks the other side. It’s all good.

Thanks for all the replies really helpful.

I’m going to skip today’s session and see how the plan adapts. My thinking is it’s better to skip rather than delete—keen to hear if that’s the right approach?

I’ve also added Friday’s outdoor ride (set as solo), but nothing has changed for today in the plan (TrainerRoad / Zwift).

Is that expected behaviour, or should the AI be adjusting Thursday based on that?
