I love the idea of 1x but there doesn’t seem to be too much evidence out there that it actually saves you meaningful watts?
+1 on this. I would not run with just the big ring from a 2x setup without the FD cage (or some kind of chain retention) keeping it in place. Just too easy to drop the chain. Even with a narrow/wide ring, a lot of people will still run some chain retention, but I’d say it’s optional with narrow/wide (particularly if only on the road).
