It’s happened a couple of times that my 840 Edge has run out of juice mid ride and to keep recording I’ve ended up using TR on my phone by using the app just to collect the workout data. I’ve also forgotten or misplaced my HRM strap and wished that I could somehow use my apple ultra to function just as an HRM monitor but the options suck.
Has anyone come up with an efficient way to use their apple watch, or perhaps a Garmin watch to serve as a back up in order to record all the important metrics including being able to export to Strava?
I was thinking that a Garmin watch might be able to do it all on the fly pretty seamlessly but would like others experience with this. TIA.
Garmin watch would serve well for what you’re asking. It can both broadcast as an HRM to your Edge if you lose your HRM strap (though it’s not perfect since it’s wrist based..) and it can also start recording if your Edge dies and you can merge the files later if you prefer.
Yes. Like wfenwick says. I have a Garmin Venu 3 watch that I used to broadcast HR to my Edge. One time I forgot the Edge and used the Venu 3 to record the ride. I paired my PM with it and it recorded the ride fine, much the same as my Edge, though it didn’t report Stamina, Training Effect, or L/R power.
As far as HR accuracy goes, it works well enough compared to my chest strap. I recorded both and sometimes the Venu 3 lags or misses some peaks or troughs, but I always get the same max and averages for a ride. What helps is tightening the wrist strap a notch or two before the ride so it doesn’t move around on the wrist.
