Ball of foot hurts after riding and during long rides

Has anyone experienced this? It feels more like burning. It hurts to walk on flat surfaces barefoot after riding.

Are your cleats positioned properly fore/aft? Do you have decent insoles? Is it possible one of your cleat screws is too long?

Good questions, but I don’t think it is position issue or cleat screw. It feels like a nerve issue.

I don’t disagree that it’s likely a nerve issue, but any of those situations might result in a nerve issue.

Does wearing socks instead of barefoot make any difference?
I put on Woolie boolie socks after a ride. I have concrete floors. It helps a lot.

Where is the pain, inside the joint or just in the skin? Does bending the the MTB joint hurt?

I’m gonna +1 what @NigelTufnel11 suggested for a couple reasons…first of all, it is super cheap to buy some pretty functional insoles, it takes about 10 minutes to install them, and it’s totally reversible in another 10 minutes if you don’t like them from the jump. SECOND, you might be surprised what you find in the bed of your shoe once you take the existing insole out. (is one of your cleat screws too long??) Now, the downside might be that the new insoles weigh more than the old. I would for sure pay an extra 20 grams for foot comfort on a long ride but not everybody feels that way.

And, finally, it might be that insoles don’t solve the problem…if not keep trying. Somebody has the answer so keep trying things until you solve it.

Could be lots of things nothing to do with cycling, could be small shoes, bad bike fit, the list goes on I’m afraid.

Thank you for the thoughts, guys. It happens in my road shoes and my mtn bike shoes, neither appear to have a screw sticking up and I have checked. The pain is below the skin. Seems to hurt on big climbs more. I have insoles, but they are less than new.
