I find multishift half gimmick. I use it since it is there, but the Sram shifter action is better so it breaks even. I have XO1 on one bike, XTR on the other. I prefer the Sram. But to switch to Sram on the Shimano bike I would also need to replace the XTR hub on my nice wheels, and I don’t dislike the XTR, just like the Sram better.

Only electronic shifting these days but one aspect I really likes about mechanical AXS: my twister. Multishift!

With the current pricing on SRAM GX Axs upgrade kit would it be completely crazy to switch to that from a xt/xtr mechanical combo?

I like electronic shifting and assume the biggest “sacrifice” to making the change would be weight?

Anything else to consider?

I went the other direction, took off AXS and went back to mechanical XTR

for what its worth, I had some infrequent yet annoying skipping on one or two shifts going from low to high gears on sram red AXS 10-33 cassette. My mechanic pulled off rear derailleur, put it back on, and problem went away.

Were you happy with the change?

Very, XTR is just so smooth.

Given the opportunity, I’d love to try AXS derailleur and Shifter (and dropper) with Shimano chain, cassette, chainring.

Problem is, as you say, the GX (and all AXS) adds a lot of weight. The huge savings on AXS kits hasn’t made it down this part of the world either yet and it’s not really a good cost/performance ratio at the full cost.

While not quite the same, I have Force eTap AXS on my road bike and XTR M9000 1x on my mountain bike. Both are excellent, but I’d likely opt for an electronic groupset if prices were close enough. If I went for a mechanical groupset and had to use my own money, I wouldn’t invest in XTR, I’d get XT, though.

Shifter preference is a real thing. On the MTB side, I don’t have a strong preference for either company (with the exception of power meters, of course). I have also had XX1 11-speed on a rental, and I got along great with the shifter, too. I’m 95 % sure it had multiple downshifts.

But to attempt to answer your question: I reckon that’s because most people prefer to push levers with their thumb even when they have the option to use the index finger for upshifts.

That was my favorite feature of my then-new XT groupset 10 years ago and I quickly adapted. My M9000 XTR trigger shifter also has the same feature. That 10-year-old XT groupset also allowed double upshifts, which was helpful when compensating front shifts. But especially on 1x, having double up shifts isn’t as important has having multiple downshifts, which I think SRAM’s mechanical shifters have, too.
