Anyone seen HR reading glitches in the app?

I’ve had glitches in cadence happen. And, sometimes, dips in Hr.

But this was a spike right at the end of the last interval on some very challenging over/unders. I didn’t notice anything at the time other than getting my ass kicked by the interval.

I’m not asking for medical advice (I’ll show this to my doctor), more checking if anyone’s seen HR strap glitches/misreadings that look similar.

Hr was really steady the other intervals. Also weird that it dropped back down to baseline even before the max effort peak. For reference my max HR shouldn’t be more than like 174’sh. And max for this workout otherwise was 168 I think.

Hey @jkyle  I looked at the ride log data, and there aren’t any interruptions.

However, what are the models of your training devices? (e.g., trainer, HRM, etc…)

I am asking this because your cadence, speed, power, HR and ERG are all coming from the same device “Victory”.

Cadence, speed, power, ERG come from Victory. HR comes from a Garmin HR strap, albeit a much older model……like probably 5 or 10 years. Like an OG HR strap/puck. I’ve replaced the band itself several times, but the puck just keeps on working.

I was looking at the same graphs in intervals raw rendering and noticed that earlier on in the workout there was a sudden drop to 0 around minute 22. Clearly I’m not dead, so that seems to obviously be a glitch. So I’m thinking maybe the battery or connectors are getting janky.

The data there backs this up

Those graphs look a lot like a bad reading on the HR monitor instead of a connection issue between the monitor and the recording device

Well, if I’ve been looking for an excuse to get a new fancy HR strap…….

FWIW: My classic 15 year old Garmin strap is still my gold standard. I have a Garmin watch now and have used other optical arm-band sensors, but the Garmin strap is the benchmark. Only wigs out when cool and dry at the start of a ride. Wetting it and ensuring good contact with the skin prevents that.

That’s generally what I’ve found too. It only wigs out on me when:

  • Beginning of ride when dry and/or cool
  • The connectors on the strap it snaps into are going bad
  • Batteries getting low.

I’ll just keep an eye on it.

Yep. The classic Garmin strap sensor is one piece of flexible plastic with no snaps. The later “deluxe” version introduced the potentially problematic snaps.

Now that you say it’s that old, it may just be the HR monitor itself.

I would, however, try replacing the battery before tossing it!

The other thing I would check is that the HRM is connecting to the TR app instead of the Victory trainer, as on the backend logs, it says “Victory” for your connection to the HR data. Or maybe you named all your devices Victory?

Actually, that’s a good call. I think it did connect through the Victory Trainer.

The Victory has been amazing for the price, but I do notice it can get a little glitchy. Particularly with cadence.

It’s like it judges the cadence from torque instead of rotation or something. Like if you’re pedaling at a super high cadence, then drop off just a little bit ….where you’d expect to go from 120 to 100 or something, it’ll briefly drop down to 70 or 80 until the cog spinning slows a bit and you torque again.

So if the HR is going through the Victory, that is very likely not the best mode.

I’ll disconnect it from Victory and I see in the config now for the trainer, I can disable the Cadence and use my own sensor. So will try that too.

@jkyle have you tried things yet? Let me know how it went!

Oh, so….mys trap is ANT+ only. That’s why it goes through the trainer, which supports ANT+, and not directly through he phone w/ TR which does not….at least that’s what it looks like. The phone doesn’t “see” the HR.

I tried relaying my HR strap through my watch to the phone. But the watches broadcast function broadcasts it’s on optical sensor regardless if a strap is connected.

Oh! I see. That’s a bummer.

Since you’re using an iPhone, then the current setup you have is the best workaround for the HR strap.

There is an ANT+ adapter you can use for iPhone, but Apple stopped manufacturing it, and you may be able to find one on eBay. But for that money, it may be better to buy a new one.

The HR data won’t drastically affect how TrainerRoad works, so you can opt to live with it or maybe get a new band that have BLE and ANT+ capabilities.

Yeah. No big deal I don’t think. It’ll be a nice excuse when I’m ready to try a fancy new strap.
