Am I a douch? Bike Shop charging for unrequested labor

The bike shop said it was required. I suggested just dropping off the part. They said they had to have the whole bike.

Update. So I would just pay it. I peddled it around and noticed it was not shifting into the smallest cog. Seeing how this is what they charged for, I brought it back in and said, “Hey, this is not shifting into the smallest cog.” They said that it was because the chain was worn out and that it could not be tuned to shift into the small cog properly. I was mentally through with them, so I just said ok. Went into the parking lot, and within 45 seconds had it shifting every gear.

Sooooo. Take with that what you will. I guess next time I will just ask for them to get the warranty part for me and specifically state that I do not want any part put on my bike. But hopefully there is no need for the part to be warranted again.

It was required or something. I had suggested that and they said they needed the bike.

I understand charging for the warranty swap, but to charge you to set up a derailleur install for it to not be working is not cool.

My shop always sends me a work order with all the service they are going to do, with prices, and asks me for confirmation before doing the service. Thus I’m never surprised when I pick up my bike.

Oof.

My beef would be this. If the shop and SRAM agree it is defective fine. But why are you learning about the $25 charge now? If they knew they were putting the part on the bike all along, just state that up front.

One path to better customer service is to avoid surprises when possible. If I used that shop again, I’d want a total in writing for the authorized work with a stipulation that all additional work must be authorized by the customer before charges are incurred.

The $25 is fine, the timing of the authorization was not. If I’m getting warranty work done, I’ve got $7.89 in my bank account, and now I get a “work is done” surprise bill before I can get my bike back. They could have done better.
