Outside gets a pretty bad rap now-a-days. If you want an alternative to TrailForks, look at MTB Project. I switched and I am generally pretty happy with it. They only thing I dislike is that shows pre-defined routes when all I really want to look at is trails. I can disable it, but I feel like I have to do that every time I go to the website or open the app.
I use RideWithGPS, free (although did sub in the past), but in conjunction with Strava Heatmaps just to confirm off road sections are rideable. Here in Ireland, RWGPS I can toggle to the OSM maps, but then that doesnât always give the full cycling picture as to whether a trail is rideable!
Iâve been a premium user of RWGPS for a while and happy with it, although I do have two grumbles.
- As others have mentioned their road surface data is not particularly great. Itâs usually directionally right, but also it will mark most of the sidewalks near my house as âoff-roadâ, which isnât always a problem but does feed Issue 2.
- Their âCyclingâ routing algorithm is great, I feel like it does a good job of keeping you off busy roads without making wild nonsensical detours. I donât think the same can be said for their âwalkingâ algorithm. It clearly prioritizes getting you off the road, but frequently eschews any logic about what route makes sense to take. Especially where there may be many sidewalks, it will make all sorts of wild turns and âlongcutsâ to bypass any short section of road. As I use it for running, and especially in a foreign place, it can be difficult to determine whatâs a valid diversion off the road you should take, and whatâs nonsensical.
Thanks for that! Iâm always looking for routes and not just individual trails. Iâll have to give MTB Project another look. Itâs been a long time since I last did.
I like RWGPS for routing, but I really enjoy Stravaâs auto route suggestions. I often will save one of those, then import in RWGPS to check street view and tweak it.
Have you got Garmin Connect? GC does Automatic Routing too. With GC you can select the direction too which when it windy I want to do.
As mentioned in the other thread there are some clouds over Komoot. I use it for planning my road cycling and hiking routes. What I find the most useful feature for me is choosing a hike or a ride based on popularity. I donât need it except for holidays so a monthly payment would be much more expensive than Komoot was. What others use for planning an itinerary for holidays (hiking, cycling)?
