Alternative to Thunderburt

Given that TBs are unavailable, what would be your second choice for a gravel tire with width being the limiter? Anything more than a 2.1 won’t work.

They measure 51mm on my 25 id rims.

Tufo Thundero 700x48 are great. Should be true to size on a ~25mm internal rim (were 50mm for my on 29mm internal). Great on gravel and quick on pavement.

Vittoria Tire Terreno 29 x 2,1.
Does not roll that good, but is more durable.

Are these for real that hard to get right now?

29x2.1 looks to be out of stock in alot of places, but the bigger ones are readily available.

Soooo Bontrager makes a 29 x 2.00 XR2. Doesn’t get talked about much. Testing it soon ish.

Modern bike had the 2.1’s in stock up to a couple days ago.

Tan/transparent and black sidewall are both sold out in 2.1’s.

Historically their tires have tested very poor.

Yeah, famously so.

Bontrager tires fill a strategic need for Trek dealers….they are meant for customers who come in and say they need new tires and have no interest in performance. The dealer makes a better margin on Brontrager tires and the customer walks away happy.

They have never been about performance at the highest level….there is a reason the Lidl-Trek team doesn’t ride Bontrager tires and the Trek Driftless gravel group was given the flexibility to run other tires.

(And there is nothing wrong with Trek’s strategy for Bontrager tires….but don’t expect them to perform well for racing / fast riding applications)

Can’t find them anywhere. LBS has them on backorder for me, and I’ve hunted around online retailers including Schwalbe’s site with no luck. See what you’ve done??

That was why I placed an order a couple of weeks ago, even though I won’t need the tires for 3 months.

Make sure you check Euro online retailers…they may be your best bet for now.

2.1 super ground in stock at Schwalbe US

Also be sure you know exactly what casing etc you want as they have so many variations.

I still don’t know why people are such a fan of these tires. Flatting is too much of a risk for me in most of the places I ride and that’s definitely slow… Maybe if you ride a lot of champagne?

It’s a very fast, reasonably grippy tire.

I have been running it for a while now, on some very technical, rocky, gravel and mtb trails and no punctures yet. N=1 but it has faired much better than some tires that are supposed to be less puncture prone.

Dunno. Prob pushing my luck but I do like em so far. 20 miles of single track on stigmata today, no complaints.

Schwalbe also makes a new tire, Rick, which sits above the Thunder Burt and below the Racing Ralph.
