2024 XC Bike & Equipment Thread

I’d love it if you could post some pics and even better video of how much play you have. I can easily break mine loose in the garage, though I’ve not really felt it an issue while riding.

The sag ring shows compression in lockout from just pressing the bars down…

Right. Brand new damper.

How hard are you pushing? I can do the same on both of mine. Here’s what my body weight on the bars (not jumping) does.

That is wild, my Sid Select has a solid lockout platform that takes one heck of a hit to blow through. My FOX 32SC has way less lockout platform.

Maybe it is time for damper service?
My 2 position SID with the race day damper is nearly rigid when locked out and freshly serviced. It does get a little looser towards the end of the service interval though.

Both of these dampers have less than 100 miles on them. . . .OK the SL may have 100. I did the install and perhaps that’s related? There’s not really much to is and other than the tension in the remote cable there’s very little that could be changed.

Then I would agree, something must be wrong. Doubt that the install of the fork has much to do with it. Both Rockshox and Fox have been somewhat plagued with poor quality control. It is not uncommon that either ships without enough oil, too much grease etc.

The SID Raceday damper has a very small amount of suspension fluid. Maybe it is very sensitive to having the correct amount of oil? Which could explain why it typically for me starts out rock solid, but develops some play as time passes?

My Blur TR got 200+ grams yesterday just with the new FA Sid compared to the 34 SC :frowning: I’m jealous now of those 23lbs Epic 8 and ASRs but will survive!

and yes, I need to cut that front brake hose now! it’s awful! wasn’t looking that long with the Fox fork

Once you have a few rides on it, would love any before & after observations you can share about it!

Can confirm. I just swapped out my SID SL Select for a SID Ultimate 3P. Big improvement. No real difference in speed, uphill or downhill. But much more confidence inspiring. If you want to save grams swap out your post for a mechanical dropper.

Now if I could just get the transmission to shift properly . . .

I’d be curious to see more real-world weights on those. The claimed <23lb weight on the Epic 8 is for S-Works size S or M only, without sealant, pedals, cages, etc. With all that stuff yeah you’ll still be a 23lb bike, but you can sleep easier with 15 thousand dollars in your pocket.

Boys/Gals… I fought my absolute hardest but as of this morning I purchased a Fox 34 Factory Step-cast - Grip SL fork and Fox Float DPS shock for my Epic Evo 7 to displace the Reba fork and Deluxe Select + Shock.

I swore to myself I would not change these components, I have had success with them (racing, PR’s, Etc) but still feel like they were clunky and not fully dialed in.

I found a deal on the mentioned fox parts I couldn’t pass up. I will update with pictures and new weights when I can (should be 260g or .57lbs saving).

I just couldn’t resist saying anything as I am excited and yes… its got that kashima bling!

Is that just the fork and shock vs Fox, or dropper too?

UPDATE 3: just picked up the bike from LBS with the second damper replaced. Reminder: original replacement was from 2021+ damper where there was no difference between the 2P positions - open and lockout. I couldn’t tell which one is which…the new 3p damper also had soft lockout, so now I have the 2nd new 3P damper installed. Result? Same as previous 3P damper…about three fingers space between seal and sag ring after compressing in lockout mode.

I look at the photos posted in this forum and it seems that this is common, but SRAM website clearly refers to “rock-solid” lockout: Charger Race Day | RockShox (sram.com)

Another website clarified further that no oil should flow in lockout unless there is a blowout: SID Family Fork Development | SRAM

LBS is confused…they don’t have a lot of XC bikes, so they said SRAM rep will call me directly.

If there are any SRAM reps lurking on this website: can you please tell us clearly what performance can be expected in lockout mode from the RD2 damper installed into a SID Ultimate fork. That would be great! Thanks in advance!

just the fork is 200 grams and change heavier than the 34 SC, I forgot to weight the shock before installing. it was 1400 fox vs 1600 sid and change, it was a little over 200grams, looks like the shock might be another 100grams or so heavier than the original float dps

Thanks, there’s part of me that’s curious about the swap, but would have to argue with myself that 3/4 of a pound and the $$$ was worth it…

A bit longer rear hose and you could do some sick bar spins at the races.

Sick looking bike though. I love the new dark blue SID color.

i have a size L Epic 8 with Trickstuff Piccolas, 1350g wheelset, xtr pedals, xx1 cranks, 12spd mechanical and I don‘t see myself ever hitting <23pounds, (10.43kg). Mind you, I have the white frame with ride wrap and FA fork and shock, ti saddle and bikeyoke 185cm dropper. I‘d say 11kg with pedals, 2 cages, garmin mount and some burlier tires is as light as my build will get.

@mfa81 that‘s a rad bike you have. I wouldn’t feel bad at all. What’s a kg between friends
