2024 XC Bike & Equipment Thread

I pm’d stans about this since they currently don’t have a carbon xc wheel. They said they’re testing some new ones.

So it’s new race bike day today for me:

Epic Evo pro purchased at 50% discount, very lucky me. Before it gets ridden on Tuesday it’ll have a Barzo/Mezcal tyre swap to tubeless and ESI chunky’s.

A question, what PM for Dub cranks? Likely a Favero Assimo it’s not bike specific?

quarq, accurate, good history of reliability, at this point is it likely you are gonna move to a non-sram drivetrain bike? so potentially can move to another bike. but the big drawback is that you likely gonna need a new 8 bolt crank arm which might make this a deal breaker unless you want to get rid of the 175mm cranks

Does anyone know more about the new Giro Xc/Gravel shoe Gritter?

Wondering how is it compared to the Sector or the Sworks Recon. Also any idea on release date?

I’ve heard late summer. Love that they still have the toe spikes most new mtb shoes don’t, I had a new pair of XC7s arrive this week otherwise I would have went for these but wouldn’t have wanted to wait until the end of the season.

I have the Sector but it’s kinda bulky, have been wanting for a lighter weight giro shoe for some time! Hope it fits the same!

I like power2max, seems in agreement with quarq on another bike.

Joe

Same. Even running it as NGEco numbers are solid

Has anyone done a deep dive into the Specialized updated Recon line?

The 3.0 looks closer to the SWorks I’m currently on.

Any insights?

If your crank has an 8-bolt chainring, quarq. If it has a 3-bolt chainring, power2max. Both can use 104BCD chainrings which is nice as it doesn’t lock you in to a particular manufacturer for ring replacements.

the quarq is 107bcd I believe, that’s what I have on my gravel bike. not sure there is one with 104bcd but in any case plenty of options as well for chainrings

The XX1 Eagle DUB model Quarq does use 104 BCD chainrings: Quarq SRAM XX1 Eagle DUB Power Meter Crankset - Power Meter City. The gravel one must be different.

SRAM’s documentation on product lines and options isn’t great, but I had great luck contacting their tech support directly. I couldn’t find much on DUB Wide spindles compatibility but when I contacted their tech support, I got a helpful response very quickly. That’s how I discovered that they do in fact make a 3-bolt DUB Wide crankset that works with 3mm offset power2max PMs which maintains the 55mm Transmission chainline.

got it… yes, the one I have is this one https://www.sram.com/en/sram/models/pm-axs-spdr-d1 maybe it’s the road version vs mountain not sure, like you said their PM line is really confusing with all the spider, threaded, spindle, etc, different types

Self admitted shoe hoarder… Six pairs of Specialized shoes in the rotation between road and off-road… In search of a new shoe for this years bikepacking races, I ordered both the new Recon 1.0 and Recon 3.0. Last year I was on the “old” Recon Lace, and loved them, with a single pair getting me through over 1200 miles of racing with at least 30 miles of hike a bike… I have a backup pair, but wanted something with just a bit more toe flex for those hike a bike miles this year.
Unfortunately, the Recon 1.0’s are just a few too many levels below the fit and finish that the S-works offerings that I’m used to, and as such, I just couldn’t bring myself to settle for them. The 3.0’s on the other hand are 90% of what the S-works Recon offer, with a bit burlier of a tread, and a bit of flex up front. No discernible flex when clipped in, but when you walk in them, you can get just a few degrees of movement, which was welcomed. Yet to tackle any long days on them, but they feel really similar to the S-works Recon/Torch. The materials feel like they will last quite well. I’m a fan of pink, with two pink bikes, but I do wish they were white…

P2Max is 104. Only limiter I’ve found is that if you want a 30t you have to buy a Garbaruk.

Agreed, love mine. Other limiter now is if you intend on getting Flight Attendant at some point it’s not clear (but unlikely) whether power readings from p2m will inform FA.

talking about FA has anyone been able to grab an aftermarket one? I’ve heard from a shop that it’s all sold old for the first batch and cannot be ordered anymore, so you might grab one if one becomes available out of the blue from a shop, shocks can be ordered with ETA of mid June right now, forks would be available again around mid August is what I’ve heard… apparently SRAM is selling a lot more than they expected

This is exactly what I was looking for, thanks!

Is fa automated like brain or is it just a wireless lockout?
