2024 Leadville Thread

I rode bottom of Kevins to Carter Aid and back this morning. That section got rained on pretty hard last night and it was wet, but it’s in good shape (already some loose/dry sections in the sun by 10am). Just some puddles in places and a couple “mini-lakes” that always seem to form on the road approaching Carter. But it’s riding fast, I was only a handful of seconds on my PR on the Kevins climb pushing 10 less watts. And I PR’d the Kevins descent by 5 seconds (which is kinda dumb 2 days before the race, but I wasn’t pushing hard). Tomorrow’s forecast is looking wet and Saturday looking mostly dry, hoping that holds up.

Related, saw a few people pushing real hard up that. More power to them if they can recover.

You may have seen me going in the other direction.

Carb loading?

I didn’t see anyone going up, but yeah I was pushing a bit. Everyone is different, but I’m a big believer in dropping volume and keeping some intensity in the week leading up to the race. The ride was only a little over an hour, but right at race pace for Kevins and then pretty easy up to carter and back. The Kevin’s climb is only 20 minutes and well under max effort, so not something that is producing any real stress. Tomorrow will be really short, but will still include a hardish effort up Kevins to the turn (about 12 minutes). Again, everyone is different, but the worst thing for me the week of a race is to just ride easy all week. I do that for rest weeks and it always takes a few days for the legs to come back.

I’ve been basically putting in the sorts of efforts I’ll be doing race day. Not really near my max. I’d usually do ‘carb load’ sprints tomorrow but my leg is still playing up so it’s probably best not to.

Unrelated, about to pick up my pack if anyone else is around.

All done, time to go back and chill.

God I wish I could have a beer or two. lol

I guess we’re supposed to pick up our clear plastic bags for drop bags at the Leadville Store?

Guess I’ll lay everything out tonight and then have to put it into Outward Bound and TL bags tomorrow.

Well, I just learned of an ex olympian (2008) who will be doing the race.
He said he is not competing… I do not believe it!

High carb has NOT been at any of the lead up event aid stations. Only raspberry lime (caffeine), strawberry lemonades, and once I saw fruit punch. Agreed, Skratch is so lightly flavored and easy on the gut.

Out of interest, what are you dropping off?

Tried their salted Margarita flavour at the stand today. If that’s there I could see myself smashing one or two if I’m sick of water / Maurten.

I know there is a shuttle from Outward Bound to Twin Lakes, but does anyone know of a shuttle between Leadville and Outward Bound?

My wife who is supporting me doesn’t drive and the other member of my support team who does drive just came down with something.

You have to bring ear drop bags, they don’t provide them as far as I know.

Well if they’re specifying the bags have to be clear then WTF? Where do we buy those here?

So the other option is to sherpa everything in. Also not an option.

The ones I used previously weren’t 100% clear. Basically zip lock food bags from the supermarket.

Got these. I’m good now.

If you need a couple find me in hi-viz at the rider meeting

I completely forgot to bring my stuff. lol, oh well, in reality its not the end of the world to carry a couple of drink sachets.

Message me if you’ve not sorted anything out.

Good luck in the race guys!

They are supplying the big zip locks at the drop bad station
