2020 XC Race Tire Thread

No one mentions Pirelli, Michelin either but that’s because their popularity isn’t the same as with Maxxis, Schwalbe, Contis and Vittoria.

Personally I’m switching from Schwalbe Racing Ray/Racing Ralph to Vittoria Barzo/Peyote 2.25’'.

Have tried Ardent Race / Ikon during the start of the year and like them but not when it’s wet/damp/slippery out.

Schwalbes are very light however but they’re not very good at letting you know when they’re about to fail.

Maxxis and Vittoria’s are better at that.

No mention of Specialized tires here. Anyone have any experience with 2019/2020 Renegades and Fast Trak tires in either S-Works or Control casings?

… and now i’ve blown through another Aspen, same spot off-centre in the large gap between the lugs.

Does anyone know if the new Aspen 2.4’s have any reinforcement in the tread? EXO sidewalls won’t help unless it’s EXO under the tread. @Jonathan @Gabriel29 @jn92 @alexstenerson @ncomerford

any photo of your aspen? I’ve punctured mine once in the center…

i’ve recently got vittoria barzo’s 2.25 but haven’t got time to test them properly.

no, i’ve binned them already this this last one was a pinch that also damaged at the bead. My punctures are always in the blank area between lugs - where there’s no lug to protect casing

Has anyone tried the 2.4 Aspen’s yet? Will they make me as fast as Nino?

Maybe you could be as fast as Nino if you could get the “pro only” 170 TPI version. The rest of us lowly mortals have to settle for the 120 TPI version.

The 2.4 is not available yet. Soon.

And no talk of specialized tires because they’re the easiest to flat tire of any in production.

Here’s a 180 TPI tire, that rolls faster than the Aspen. Continental Cross Kings.

FWIW, I recall the TR guys saying they asked the guy who runs bicyclerollingresistance.com to test the new Aspen. And the result now included in the site I linked to.

If you read carefully, he’s testing with tubes in the tires too.

Finally received them 1309g with Carbon-Ti Hubs 28/32 spokes and 28mm id, Ashima Rotors but no Casette mounted yet. So final weight is yet to be determined. They are looking slick though

Scott is back on my radar. My biggest quip is the stupid remotes they use. I’m not against remotes but must have an under the bar lever for dropper. I’m sure there’s a way around that. I’m looking at a 120 mm Spark, it looks really dialed.

I’ve been really surprised by running Ikons 2.35 front and rear, I prefer it over the Ardent Race up front. On really long endurance back country events with a lot of tech descending I have taken the weight penalty of an Aggressor up front. At my level, it doesn’t matter.

Yeah, there’s kinda no way around that, which is why I just chose to run a dropper and no remote on mine because I like to keep it cleaner.

BUT it looks like a lot of people are liking running the wolftooth bar centric remote with a remote lockout.

Can you convert the Nude shock to non-remote?

If you stretched the the AXS dropper you could use a SRAM blip like Kate Courtney and Nino.

I’m not sure I’m on a scale, sorry. I ghetto rigged my remote fork to stay open all the time though.

Anyone running Cushcore XC in their race tyres?

@Jonathan mentioned it on the pod (loving the Cape Epic chat btw) and so I’ve been looking it up. Seems those that have used them really rate them for trail use, but I can’t find much discussion from racers.

I’ve run XR2 F/R this year and I’m really impressed by the tires. Second place goes to the Vittoria Mezcals…I live in Bentonville and both seem to have adequate sidewall protection against the sharp rocks.

FWIW: I ran an XR1 in the rear for a dry race and it was legit.

I should also add I guess to stay closer to the topic. I’ve got the new Schwalbe Racing Ray and Racing Ralph combo in 29x2.35 Snakeskin protection. I also have a Nobby Nic as a wet track alternative.
