Why would you run bigger knobs in the back? The Ikon has bigger knobs than the Rekon Race. The Rekon Race and the Rekon are different tires. The Rekon “Race” is a semi slick per Maxxis website and is recommended for the rear of the bike.
I have the Racing ralph 2.35 in the front and a Thunderbolt 2.10 in the back… now i will change the back up for every tread depending on the terrain but i live in florida where most of the trails not have big climbs however there are some punchy climbs here. so I use what i have and where im racing/riding.
Why Ralph in front over Ray? I assume you are on the latest updated tyres which are end specific?
The side knobs are larger on the Rekon Race compared to the Ikon, however point taken on Maxxis’ recommendations. Looking at their line up more closely, I’d like to try some Aspens. I will still stand by my thoughts on the Ikons, they always delivered more grip than their profile would suggest, and I’m keeping that in mind when I look at the Aspens, those side knobs look the rowdiest in the race line up. I’ve tried the Ardent race and didn’t love it…
My apologies It is a Ray…
According to bicyclerollingresistance.com, the side knobs on the Ikon measure 3.9mm while the side knobs on the Rekon Race measure 3.5mm. So the Ikon actually has bigger side knobs than the Rekon Race. These measurements came from the 2.2 Ikon and the 2.25 Rekon Race.
I measured them both, 2.35 versions. The largest side knob on the Rekon Race measures a full 1mm longer than the Ikon. The Ikon uses a constant side knob pattern, while the Rekon Race uses an alternating pattern on the side knob. So which side knob did they measure? Did the 2.2 versions have a different mold? Etc, Etc.
Any experience on min clearance to seat stays.
I’m tyring to fit a 2.35 tyre on a hardtail. When fitted and at 30psi the min clearance between knob and frame is approx 7mm. Is this enough or do I need to drop down to a 2.2?
Try to flex the wheel to where it might contact the frame then add some 3M tape, keep a close watch, drop down to the next tire width of required. 7mm is pretty tight but it depends on your riding style, psi, wheel stiffness etc
To anyone wondering how Pirelli Scorpion’s hold up in the mud, they are great, no problems clearing, and plenty of grip. I rode the Mixed terrain in 2.4.
My 2012 Anthem is built around the 2.2ish tyre size clearance and I run 2.35 Schwalbe’s without issue.
I have marginally less than 7mm at the top/centreline of the tread on the rear triangle and it seems fine. I’ve tried bigger tyres that have caused issues so am confident in the current set up.
N=1 and YMMV
Can anyone with a new Epic Evo speak to the tire clearance? I’m guessing 2.4WT on 30mm rims would fit fine?
Yes, no problems
Just don’t roost corners or throw whips ![]()
Nice to see those pirelli tires in the wild. it’s been a year since they have been introduced and still everyone seems to dig the xc stuff from maxxis/schwalbe. I’m wondering if I should replace my Forekaster 2.35 with the XC S in 2.4 for the winter. Have you had a chance to try one out?
There’s definitely heaps of loyalty / resistance to change from Maxxis. I haven’t tried the S but the tread looks pretty open so you’d only need that version in the rear imho.
Can you explain to me why you’d use those in the rear? Pirelli has a rear specific tire. I guess the XC S wouldn’t clog up with the open patern on wet and muddy climbs as much as the R but apart from that it would probably roll pretty slow.
I’m runnning a Barzo on the rear right now and altough I like the braking power and traction overall that tire is far from fast rolling.
Sorry, I meant S on the Front, for the reasons you describe
How have you found the Barzo (and did you try the Mezcal) over time?
At my recent A Race I was surprised by just how many riders were riding Vittoria tyres. I must admit they look great with the tan or anthracite walls.
I notice they also do a 2.6 in both but I can’t find how well they perform. I also can’t work out how robust the Barzo/Mezcal are/what sort of puncture protection they have.
I went from Rekon Race to Ikons (front and rear) and they are better in all aspects, even in rolling rezistance!
