XC Race Clothing on the "Looser / Baggy" side

MTB’ers tend to wear camelbacks with storage or fanny packs.

It goes both ways. I used to consider mtb the “friendly” guys too, but join a Facebook MTB page and you’ll constantly see memes and people dropping slurs about roadies.

Dirt vs Tarmac hate (within, without & in any directions) dates back a LONG time. I got my start in real cycling in 1992, and the shade was thrown from my very entry to this world. People have been and can be jerks, period.

At least we all agree on triathletes and gravel.

(I kid, I kid)

Check out bib liners. They usually have pockets sewn into the back where you can chuck stuff that would normally be reserved for jersey pockets.

I like padded lycra shorts (I currently use the Zoic Carbon) with some casual black shorts and a loose-fitting “road” jersey. I wouldn’t mind a more casual T-shirt-style jersey, but most of my jerseys have been free from events, so I can’t justify paying a bunch of money for a shirt I wouldn’t wear very often. I also don’t feel bad for cutting the sleeves off of one of them… I use a USWE, so most stuff goes in it, but the jersey pockets can be nice for easy access to some things. My outer shorts (“shell,” except not bike-specific) tighten with a drawstring. Wearing them with bibs while road riding is fine, but I tried them with bibs exactly one time while mountain biking and had terrible slippage, so that’s why I prefer just the non-strapped shorts - plenty of hip grippage. I guess for this topic, it should be noted that I’ve never raced, but I would probably wear the same thing if I did. Bike shorts are too short on my long quads and I don’t look good in bare lycra…

My NICA team used the Flux MTB shorts from Jakroo for our team gear, they are my favorite shorts now. Wish I would have bought two.

For XC riding i am very fond of my two Leatt MTB 1.0 baggies.
They are kind of tight fitting, with a light and stretcy fabric. They have zippered pockets of which one of them holds my phone very firm and easy accesible.
I use regular bibshorts underneath, but prefer the ones which have a “radio-pocket” or roadie style pockets for stashing riding candies and/or other small items.
I use semi-loose t-shirt style shirts.

Ive been wearing 7Mesh Farside shorts this summer on top of bibshorts. The Farside short is great for climbing as it’s not as long and loose as my enduro shorts. But once the cooler Fall/Winter riding season comes and for casual riding I’ll switch back to my enduro shorts.

For trail shirt, i had a very comfortable 7Mesh merino wool short sleeve shirt which was great in the summer heat as it breathed well and wicked away sweat, and not too baggy. Unfortunately i lost it and have not yet found another high quality warm weather trail shirt. There seem to be a lot of branded shirts/jerseys made of cheap fabric - durable yes but not the best fitting and tend to feel like wearing a garbage bag in the heat.

Most of my riding is enduro and xc with lots of climbing.

This is very timely, as I was just looking at more mtb-style clothing (as I’m also a recovering roadie). Are these baggies very durable? Is one brand more durable than the others?

I am still working on my handling skills and tend to crash/wash-out in corners a lot as I test out the limits of my equipment and abilities. I have destroyed so much lycra!

Baggies are usually made of very tough material. Think parachute pants. I’ve never torn a pair in 20+ years of riding mtbs.

I proudly wear my roadie kit on my XC bike. Maybe i’ll wear normal tight fit and not race fit but standards are standards. It’s completely practical and comfortable, and it colour matches correctly.

Way back when I started mountain I don’t recall any baggy anything. Riding was all xc for me with some pretty epic rides mostly around Colorado and Utah. I don’t remember crashing too much so clothes seemed to last. It sure sounds like people are pushing it way harder on the descents and thus the need for some extra protection? Anyways, I love the look. So much that I’m going to be the only one in large roadie group rides to where these. Roadie heads will explode or I will get curbed

Definitely part of it for me. MTB baggies certainly are less expensive to replace than my lycra which is all rather high end. Crashing in $250-300 bibs is no fun.

Anyone have any recommendations for something like this?

A running shirt

In terms of material or appearance?

Something like a non-zipper jersey. Looking for something that is a little tighter than a dry-fit running shirt but doesn’t get drenched in sweat. So a non-jersey, jersey.

Try this: Defend Jersey | Fox Racing®

Im 175lbs and the size small fits tight loose ha. But its “fitted” and the arms are cut a bit longer so there isnt a lot of riding up in the attack position which is my normal complaint about most mtb jerseys.
