Not seeing your speed on your garmin only works to a degree, because we all have an inbuild calibration, judging speed from how fast we go past trees etc. You might not be able to say an exact number, but you can feel “slow for this effort”.

Agreed, perhaps more accurate is perception of speed than actual speed readout in terms of affecting RPE.
