Likely lack of compensation for appearing in the series. Sofia had said in a podcast last year that Lifetime’s proposed compensation at that time IIRC was ‘exposure’
The odder exclusion was Sofia….but I am guessing that had more to do with how she was portrayed last year vs. a decision by the film makers.
I see no reason why they would have included Dylan, honestly……maybe because he has a decent social media following, I suppose, but that doesn’t necessarily add anything to the narrative. He was a non-factor in the series both years and his one moment of “glory’ was captured at the start of the Sea Otter race. Not certain he deserved much more than that, honestly……and I like Dylan.
I think the sad reality is that bike racers don’t really have very charismatic personalities. IMO, the most engaging people are Sofia and maybe Hannah Otto. Everyone else is a bit dull to me.
But I still enjoyed the season….they improved the coverage from S1, but I would still rather see timely episode drops across the year vs. everything dropping 9 months after the start of the season.
They can only follow/craft story lines for so many riders. They’re trying to figure out who those are ahead of time and then build from there. Dylan, while we all like him, did not figure into the points race in the first two years. As for Sofia, I have zero doubt that they would have wanted her on more in season two but she wasn’t super happy how they made her look in the first season and thought the racers should be paid to participate as well. I have no problem with that. She opted out, they didn’t write her out.
Publicity. Aside from this show, most of these people probably don’t have a way to get known in a meaningful way. Heck most world tour riders arent household names. And, if i’m not mistaken…US pro racers are paid closer to a social media personality than for winning races.
Did she actually say those things?
Still, they mentioned her several times. I just found it weird that some other athletes were never even mentioned. I’d rather hear from other athletes over Kimo telling us something obvious or meaningless over and over.
I heard her on multiple podcasts after last season was released and that was the gist of it. She did not come off well in those videos, but every time I’ve heard her on a pod I end up liking her a lot more. So it absolutely makes sense why she didn’t want to do it again. All they got from her this time was footage during a race or at a finish line. No sit down interview stuff.
Yeah, I think much of the negative stuff was by design/effect for last year’s video. But she still said those things and she’s got to be smart enough to know how things can come across when put into a sound bite. From my perspective, she doesn’t care that much about perceptions and wants to focus on the riding part of her job. She does come across better in podcasts on her terms, but I’d still be cringing at times if I was her sponsor. Clearly, she’s not one to play the media game with a bunch of positive “empty” words (the stuff ever coach and athlete are trained to spit out when interviewed in mainstream sports). As one of the strongest riders, she has the ability to basically give lifetime the middle finger and they will still have her back next year. If her sponsors are good with her public persona, more power to her for doing what the hell she wants and saying how she feels. Folks in the mid pack are in a much different position where they need every minute of airtime and they are going to do whatever they can do to get in tight with lifetime and other media outlets.
Is there extra footage with premium?
No commercials before, during or after any video on YT except for paid placements within the video by creators.
No
It was a tough question that was worded a bit awkwardly but I think it’s a fair ask. Not a fluff question though like most of the others.
Every rider pretty much said similarly…it’s Keegan and the fight for 2nd for 2 straight years.
Working my way through the newest season of Drive to Survive, one of the things that is missing from Call of a Lifetime is any footage outside of ‘around the races’ of the racers, them in the off-season, training, talking with sponsors, having fun, those things build the character up in a way Call of Lifetime isn’t able to as all the footage is around the race weekend only. I know quite a few racers go for ‘beach’ vacations with time off the bike in the off season, would be good to show a bit of that, maybe sponsor stuff like the new Felt and Trek team formation for example and to feature more of the guys that are trying to stay in the series fighting for that top 20 rather than just Keegan, Keegan, and people talking about Keegan. A lot of Drive to Survive is the other guys, who actually won is rarely discussed but similar to Keegan its almost always Max.
To do all this would definitely require a much bigger budget but I think there needs to be way more fluff and less focus on who won and how if they want it to be more Drive to Survive like.
Agreed. Max is going to survive, drivers below 10th place?
Call of a Lifetime could spend more time on the riders outside the top 10 that are having, what one might describe as an opportunity of a lifetime to compete for bigger profile and actual money.
