What are your unpopular cycling opinions?

I don’t own one, but my local Midweek race group did a fat bike series this year and now I want one. Though it’s still hard to justify yet another bike for 4 races a year.

This part is clearly an unpopular opinion

Lol, yeah.
I’m trying to offload 3 bikes right now. And I don’t plan on replacing them

I don’t care if people (pros or amateurs) use PEDs and race.

On the pro side, the racing has been so amazingly exciting the last 5 or so years, I don’t really care if it’s because everybody is on something. Let them juice for all I care, or keep it hidden. I’d rather have all out, crazy attacks, down to the wire racing like we’ve had.

On the amateur side, if you feel the need to dope for your local race or whatever, I’m not sure what I can say. I’m racing because it’s fun. It’s not my profession, I’m not getting a paycheck. Yea, winning is a lot of fun, but I just want to race my bike. If some guy or gal wants to dope to win or compete for a nothing race, they have deeper issues at hand. My enjoyment isn’t contingent on them.

Strava should only allow KOMs/QOMs if you have a power meter.

Way too many “athletes” that seem to be taking these that are very obviously on ebikes.

You mean “pathletes” out doing “pathletics”

I think for marathons/xcm races frame weight differences (say between a steel and a carbon FS) are not that significant in terms of finishing times even for advanced amateurs

The way some people in the US cycling world refer to themselves as “Coach Bob” or whatever seems wrong to me. It’s not like you’re a doctor or a priest, your name is just Bob.

This one just strikes me the wrong way. Not wearing a helmet? Freak accidents do happen. I just dont get not wearing a helmet.

A cousin died who was taking out his garbage and slipped. Hit his head. Not hard enough for him to really notice anything but he was dead three days later.

I ride a helmet even just noodling around the neighborhood. Growing up I had a teacher who had a serious head injury from crashing on her cruiser bike just cruising around the neighborhood. I don’t know if I ever knew all the details of the crash but I know she wasn’t wearing a helmet and it was a long recovery for her.

When i was a kid, I didn’t want to wear a helmet because it wasn’t “cool” but my dad told me to tell the other kids I was going to college, so I always wore one. Now as an adult I always have my brain bucket on unless I’m doing a quick test ride in the neighborhood. Thanks Dad, I made it to college safely. although now that i think about it, ironically, when I biked on campus as an undergrad, I didn’t always wear one.

Funny?/ not really.

Please, not again.

I think more important are wheels and tyres
If they are more forgiving in terms of materials and pressure, the frame difference of 2 kgs is not so important

If it’s too cold to ride without arm warmers, it’s definitely too cold to ride without leg warmers.

The amount of people who I see riding without leg warmers, but with arm warmers is baffling to me.

Takes me back to my commute 15 years back into Edinburgh. I would pass a bloke who every day come minus temps or balmy 20deg + (well balmy for Scotland ) would be wearing the same puffer jacket and shorts. My knees are in agony just thinking about it :joy:

That is really inappropriate. What does your comment have to do with cycling?

In almost all cases, black jerseys are dumb. They make you hot and limit drivers’ ability to see you on a bike.

It’s a reasonable point. The risks of serious head injury from cycling are far higher than walking around. And wearing a helmet is a really easy way to reduce that risk.

5c or above is shorts weather imo.

My legs are working and never feel slightly cold, my arms are not working but still in the wind so they get cold.
