Unbound Gravel 2022

I am also bringing an extra tire and tube, in case Sagan and Oss need me somewhere on the course :grinning:

Pretty sweet ride for Nathan Haas…although surprisingly, the ā€œchromeā€ fork and stays don’t really work for me.

I saw this on CyclingTips … this is the ā€œeliteā€ start list for the Unbound 100.

Does anyone know, outside of Sagan and Oss, who would be the odds on favorite to win? I haven’t heard of most of these riders…

Stephen Hyde is the ex CX pro…former national champ.

past that… :man_shrugging:

Eddie Anderson is a pretty big name. Second to Stetina at BWR 2019.

If anyone follows Pete Stetina on Instagram, check out his recent story of a water crossing we’re supposed to have on Saturday :joy:

Payson McElveen is in emporia and preriding the course on insta story as well. TLDR: Mud

Sheesh

The Emporia area got a lot of rain the last day or so, I wouldn’t expect those conditions on race day, unless there is significant rainfall that continues until race day.

Just remember it is also the weather upstream now that can affect the water level on race day…so if areas further up north are getting dumped on today, it could be a mess on race day even if there is no rain locally.

This dude is my new hero……forced to stop Unbound at mile 120, but goes back the next day to finish the last 80. Stud.

If you’re riding the 200 or XL, be sure to download the course again because there are changes.

I rode the 100 mile course this morning and it was in surprisingly good shape. Just one small section where my tires were grabbing mud and I had to shoulder my bike and walk for a bit. There were a few other sections that would have been bad with a group, but I think it will all be good by Saturday.

:face_with_diagonal_mouth:

Haha, reminds me. It looked like Keegan has his white road shoes and pedals, or did. Brave choice if so.

If anyone sees this 89yo legend out on course, give him some encouragement from those of us who live overseas and/or can’t make it to Unbound this year!

Are you REALLY riding gravel if you’re not dirty afterwards?

I remember riding on my normal gravel 20 mile loop. Had already done 1 loop and was on 2nd loop. 1 section would often have a muddier section for a couple days after rains. Ran into another rider before that section and he asked how that section was. I responded not bad today and completely rideable. He said judging by the back of your jersey doesn’t look fine. My jersey had a line of mud up the back. He turned off to avoid that section since he didn’t want to get dirty I guess. :man_facepalming:

That’ll rip some derailleurs off. Hope people heed the advice to get off and walk for sections where it’s sticky and muddy like that

It’s a common refrain.
ā€œIf you see mud and people walking, get off and walk. Don’t be that rider that ignores it and becomes one with the mud.ā€

LOL, I wouldn’t choose white shoes for any of my off road endeavours. Seems like too much effort to keep them that way

Wanted to say good luck to everyone. Remember, a finisher is a starter that never quit. Think I’ll put that on a t shirt. Might need front and back tho. God speed everyone!

Me neither. Black shoes are fine. At this point, with gravel, dry or muddy, I just assume everything’s going to be dirty. I just do a quick wipe down of my bike to get major crud off and keep my drivetrain clean
