To SRAM Force eTap AXS users

Great idea for the correct wedge as a direct influence on proper cage adjustment. I’ve dropped the chain several times on the outside during the first few rides with Force AXS. I’ve tweaked the cage height to 1mm and dialed in the high limit screw, but still getting occasional drops. I’ll try a different wedge so I can turn the entire unit just a little more inboard (to the left) on the braze-on tab. Thank you for sharing this tip! :grinning:

My partner has a 2020 Domane with the Force AXS etap 12-speed drivetrain. It has the chain catcher installed on it, OME. No problems in the first year and probably put on ~1000-1500 miles on it (really low mileage due to COVID and other reasons). The first ride after the annual maintenance checkup, the chain dropped on the inside and got jammed behind the chain catcher and wrapped around the bottom bracket. Had to take it to the shop because couldn’t fix it on the road, luckily we were by the car. Shop readjusted everything and noted that the chain catcher was a bit loose. About 5 rides later, it happened again, chain wrapped on the inside and behind the chain catcher. It happened while pedaling up a hill and downshifting. This time I was able to fix it manually on the road, but it was tough to get it out from under the catcher. The chain drops did alot of cosmetic damage to the matte finish, but nothing more serious. Shop redid all of the settings and made some more adjustments. Will see if that helps it. I am personally wondering if the issue is related to both derailleurs shifting at the same time during the SRAM sequential shifting mode. Will keep you posted. Love the ease of use of electronic shifting but this issue is very frustrating, particularly on such an expensive bike. My own 11- speed Ultegra and Campagnolo 9 speeds cabled systems work flawlessly.

Been on Force AXS since August 2020. eTap 11 going back to 2016. No issues.

One positive is the 12 speed chain is coming up on close to 6000 miles or 9600Km and it shows no wear. I check it with a Park CC3-2 and had the shop check it with a Pedros Chain Checker Plus II which is what SRAM recommends. Again, no signs of wear.

The other positive are the pulley’s spin super free. At least better than the 11 speed version and any stock Shimano.

One small issue I had is the sync mode on the app. I never used it and accidentally turned it on. Shifting was a bit off but, nothing my mechanic couldn’t adjust. Just a heads up. May have been a freak thing…

With this chain, I confirm it! :slight_smile: I bought a backup chain because I thought that, like in Ultegra (my previous bike), it will be changed after 1000 km. I have 1200km done and the chain shows no signs of wear. You wrote 9600km, wow! :open_mouth:

What are you doing to be trashing chains after 1000km - that’s only a handful of rides.

Maybe I was not very precise. I do not throw it into the trash but replace it with the less stretched one. Usually rides on two chains, “Rotation system” :slightly_smiling_face:

Same here. Been on force axs since may 2020 about 8000+ miles. Bought a backup chain a year ago and still have no signs of wear on the original. Diligent in drivetrain cleanliness and Using the sram recommendation of the park tool cc-4 chain checker. Astounded at the longevity.

The higher end SRAM chains are stout but I’ve had bad luck breaking them and the lower end ones are AWFUL. I use Rock N Roll GOLD every 200 miles on road, every 4th or 5th ride on MTB

Eagle GX chain lasted 600 miles and was so worn it destroyed my cassette, and broke it 3 times while shifting

At the same time I was running an Ultegra chain on my road bike that made it to 10,000 miles and still wasn’t registering .5% wear I just tossed it at that point anyway.

Replaced both

Eagle X01 chain is wearing very well and no stretch at 400 miles yet but has already broken twice, once it snapped a rivet and another time the power link fell apart and I’m using AXS single shift so not money shifting it 4 gears at a time

Dura Ace road chain made it to 5500 miles before being replaced

My conclusion: Higher end SRAM chains are great, lower end SRAM chains are junk. My Ultegra chain was a freak, 5,000mi seems more the norm from what I’ve read for shimano.

The shop made a number of adjustments on the bike for the front derailleur and such. First ride out after the visit and ~ 0.25 miles into a 22 mile bike ride, the chain comes off on the outside of the crankset; fine for the rest of the ride. Haven’t take it back into the shop again yet, perhaps it was a fluke; and will see if it happens again. Very frustrating! Also, now, the groupset really seems noisy in the back at times. I will need to ride it myself and check it out; hard to tell really what is going on while riding behind the bike.

A very late follow up - but SRAM has a current known issue with firmware updates on this model. My Force AXS FD was recently a victim of this - where the firmware update had an error, and despite reset, new beta firmware installation, and countless back and forth with SRAM customer service (which was absolutely stellar FWIW), my FD is bricked. I bought my SL7 with Force/Red AXS as a second owner, so no warranty applies. $260 plus install fees for a new FD, and I should be back in business. :crossed_fingers:

However, it was difficult finding the Force AXS FD in stock in a non-wide version. I was almost stuck with a 50T 1x for a while (which I can confirm is NOT pleasant on steep climbs).

As a former Shimano (Dura Ace) user, I absolutely LOVE the SRAM AXS, as it’s so intuitive, easy to use, and ergonomically well designed. I just wish my software didn’t brick this component :sweat_smile:
