Things to think about when flying with a bike

Will be robbing the idea of marking the foam, rather than doing the jigsaw from all the one’s thrown in when I get home.

So the short of it is, no one can or will ever be held accountable for mishandling a bike while it’s “underwing”

I looked into flying with my bike, pre-pandemic, and ended up choosing to drive (UG!) based on cost and liability. (after that, Delta announced better rates for bike shipping) On the way back, I tried to ride a huge climb at a hotel I was staying at and found out that a suitcase bent the rear rotor bad enough it wasn’t rideable. I tried to straighten it but didn’t have any tools to pull it off properly. I’ve also heard some local horror stories of people traveling with their bikes. (Many have a ‘travel bike’, and a case, adding to the whole expense) One guy was flying to China for a month, and Chinese customs ‘detained’ his bike on the return for nearly a month. He never got a reason, and it all showed up eventually, but was bizarre that it got into China timely, but got bollixed up getting out. He had a Feedback small trainer thing, and that went through in a carry on with nothing but a few strange looks. He was certainly happy it got hung up outbound rather than inbound. Delta ‘lost’ another rider’s bike and they had to rent for a race. It finally showed up the morning they were leaving that afternoon, but, maddeningly, did finally show up, undamaged.
