Sodium vs chloride

There is some debate regarding the value of potassium in sports drinks, but that does seem like a pretty big dose at about 200mg of potassium an hour. Skratch, in comparison has 39mg of potassium per scoop, which is typically consumed over an hour. Skratch however uses citrate based electrolyte (sodium citrate, potassium citrate, etc), not chloride based, so chloride is taken out of the equation.

If you are also using sodium chloride in your mix, instead of sodium citrate, you might run into issues with all the chloride. Ultimately testing it yourself and seeing how you do and how your gut responds will get you your answer, but for me I’ve found my gut does better with citrate based electrolytes and it also yields the additional benefit of citrate being metabolized to bicarb which also could have benefits.
