Sorry the biggest is 10-44. Pairing that with a 38 will give you a pretty small gear. And I’m pretty much never spin out on my 40t chainring so I don’t think you’ll lose to much with a 38x44. And the hydraulic brakes are simply unmatched anywhere IMO!
Just a small comment: if you need a range of 46:9 = 511 %, then the only setup that would give you closely spaced gears is SRAM AXS eTap with a 43/30 crank and a 10-36 cassette. But then the question is whether you actually need to have such a tall top gear.
Even if you want a quiver killer bike, I reckon you’d ideally want to have two wheelsets just so that you have tires optimized for each scenario. And then you can get two cassettes anyway.
Yup that’s what I have. A gravel wheeler that I run the 10-44 or 9-42 on and a road set with the 9-36. Two sets of wheels and three cassettes! I may go crazy and add a chainring!
I came close to ordering my road bike with Erkar, too. The versatility and gearing would have been great. And I for sure would not have said no to another climbing gear.
However, if you want 500ish % range, I think the type of terrain you’d be riding is much close to that of a mountain bike where the larger gaps between gears don’t matter so much as the terrain is usually much more variable anyway.
Yup. That’s what will be on my next bike for sure (I already have a 1x aggressive gravel/Mtb with 9-46, and a Crux that I’ve been using with the 9-46 for gravel racing season).
