Should I get a Garmin Forerunner as a Cyclist for the purpose of running and daily usage? Or am I better off with an Apple Watch?

If you’re already using Garmin, the path of least resistance is to stay within their ecosystem for consistency/interoperability.

FOMO lol. If it helps, I use AW features far more often than sports watch features. And I’m a serious user of my previous Garmin 530 and now 840.

Here are the AW apps/settings I use:

  • Sleep++
  • Athlytic
  • RunGap
  • set Apple Watch to collect HRV every 15 minutes

Athlytic is very nice in that it explains why its suggesting duration/intensity for today’s cycling workout. I’ve got a plan and am using that, its just interesting to a) see what it suggests, and b) review trends in RHR, HRV, Recovery, and Sleep Debt. Thats the same way I would use Garmin sports watch stuff, although as stated above I only look at the stuff once, maybe twice a week. Versus using the smart watch features throughout the day.

have you seen anywhere documented that (IIRC turning on Afib burden) it can collect HRV every 15 minutes? The searches I did said it samples every hour if you turn that on. Also from various readings I did about HRV they suggested the best method was to use the Breathe app as soon as you wake up and use that reading as the daytime ones will vary massively? I had my hands on FR 265 und 965, the Fenix 7s, Epix Gen2 and Apple Watch Se

Apple Watch is incredible well built and nice, but already at day one, charging and the battery drain felt catastrophic.
Epix Gen 2 is to bulky - the pro is too expensive
Fenix 7s felt a big weird from the diameter / hight ratio and well, the display is dull in comparision
Forerunner 965: very nice, display is better than 265 (I think it is the glass), features are great, the titanium feels really good.
265: yeah, display is a bit behind 965, I like the size a bit better maybe than 965.

Overall: 965 just feels so expensive, even tough it would be perfect. I am now considering the 265 and have to live with the 100% plastic.
(considered a venu2, which is considerable less expensive, but I kind of want the features of the 265 if I am buying a new watch).

Verdict: I will probably buy a 265 and I ll be happy with it.

Just a thought since you mentioned cost as a factor. November isn’t that far away. If you can wait, you’ll save even more by buying Black Friday deals.

If using a Garmin Edge 1040 you should also check if your new watch supports Garmin Unified Training Status and Physio TrueUp. Otherwise the status will not be in sync.

Thanks, I might wait for Black Friday, but I am not very confident that the newer watches will get any substantial discount.

Regarding Unified Training Status: Thank you for the hint. The 265 has it, and if I am not mistaken, on the watch and in Garmin Connect, I would see the unified status, but on the edge just the “edge” status. Correct? That would be ok, I barely use the edge to check stats, I use the connect app.

I think you need Edge 1040 (or x40).

Do you have a Venu2? I can’t find anything about turning this on for other watches.

My Fenix6/iPhone combo doesn’t have anything that looks like “scroll down to heart and turn on Afib”

I can also pull up the Health app and look at history. And if I had Afib compare to Life Factors like Exercise Minutes, Sleep, Weight, Alcohol Consumption, etc.

A family member needs to get a new Garmin for running. Would you recommend the Forerunner 265 or 965?

I eventually went with the 965.

The price difference to the 265 was 120€. For me, the metal + the better (reflections) and larger display + the longer battery life + maps made it absolutely acceptable.

I tried on the 265, it feels like a good watch, has basically alle the features the 965 has (even chronic training load, which wasn’t there in the Begining). Only maps are missing. But the build of the 965, in my opinion, is better and more premium. The display side-by-side is noticeably better on the 965.

Anyway, both a good. If I wouldn’t wear the watch every day and thought it should also look good, I would be happy with either. So if it is only for running, 265 would be also a very good choice, even the 255 would be great (though I like the training readiness so far)
