Short crank makes my riding style change, should I change back?

170, 79.5.

Performance dropped initially - particularly longer, harder efforts as I mentioned before, after the 4 months its returned to the same, possibly improved a little - but I’ve also been training consistently. I wouldn’t expect a performance gain from the change though.

What I have gained is a lot of functionality - being able to hold a lower position for longer, a more fluid pedal stroke as well as fewer knee, ITB and foot issues.

Don’t forget you’ve also moved your foot back 5mm and you might want to account for that too at the seat or the cleats.

yep, moved back by 3mm during the fitting. I will see hows feels.

Reviving this, as I recently switched to 160mm cranks (on purpose this time).

Brought saddle height up 5mm to match, but do I now need to move saddle forward 1-2mm?

Yeah, you can move the saddle forward that amount. It’s rather minor in either case, so not likely to make a big difference in any event. That is largely up to your feel.

You’ve already moved 5mm forward relative the power portion at 3:00 so you may want to move back instead of forwards, and maybe not even move any amount up.

I deliberately skipped this sticky wicket, but since you mention it… There are the two competing schools when it comes to saddle fore-aft:

  1. F-A should be considered relative to the lead foot with the crank level.
  2. F-A should be considered relative to the crank center at the bottom bracket.

Both have merit and I am not locked into either, having used both successfully. So as with most fitting stuff, there are guidelines but not necessarily hard-fast rules.
