Severe overtaining and burnout - anyone come back from it? (4.7w/kg FTP to depressed couch potato...)

I feel you on the cost of travel. When you add it all up it can be pretty expensive commuting by car and public transport.

One thing I have done that was recommended by friends and also people on this forum was to break my training up into smaller blocks with 3 weeks of hard training and 1 rest week. There are some good threads on it here.

I found I would start to get a sore throat or a sick feeling when pushing hard through the standard trainerroad blocks. If you were thinking about training again please consider this a viable option to manage your fatigue.

And yet another pro version of burnout:

Bottom line of burnout recovery, even if you’re a pro – go ride your bike for the simple pleasure of riding your bike.

I think I just have a terrible immune system. I had a break from work for a few months and got up to running around 35 miles per week and was feeling OK on that since I could run in the morning and just relax all day, sleep as much as needed, etc.

In the last two months since starting a new full time job I have come down with cold symptoms three times - one of those turned into a full blown cold that lasted three weeks.

Following that cold I started doing 20-30 minutes of easy running a day (<70% heart rate) and a little calisthenics. I was intentionally holding back and not doing anything stressful - was feeling good and motivated then all of a sudden I have a scratchy throat again and the cold symptoms hit.

Right now I don’t feel like I can train at all, the constant cycle of feeling good then getting sick is demoralising - I can’t sleep any more than I do and my diet is very good with loads of fruit and vegetables, rice, fish, etc.
