Re the IRC x-guards - I can’t say that I’ve pushed them hard on pavement, but I’ve had no issues with them a year in riding them in wet wintery conditions and abusing them on a chunky gravel climb way too hard, worst I did was burp one the day after install. Since then sealant has been flawless. I’m around 73 kg and keep them in the 70-75 range. For comparison , my regular tire is GP5000TL. Contrast with my first experience riding Conti gatorskins in Mallorca a couple weeks ago on a rental bike - now those were TERRIBLE! Lost it on very first descent and first time I’ve ever felt like I couldn’t trust a tire, but I usually spend money for much higher quality tires at home and that experience will ensure I continue to do so. I need to write up a trip report for that week…
Kicking around going tubeless. I do race, right now just road and this season will be crits, Weds night worlds, maybe a fondo or two. If I can find time late season, might go back to triathlons. We’ll see. Anyway…
Currently running 25mm Conti GP4000 with latex on Hed Jet 6 plus usually at 85psi or so. I’ve double wrapped with Hed tape in the initial buildup, so really just a valve and all the other hassle to go TL. I think I’d gain 3-4W plus the benefit with punctures and lower pressure… seems like it’d be worth it? I’d probably run Conti GP5000TL.
Anyone running the Jet wheels tubeless? Which tire. Thoughts?
I run Jet 6 tubeless with 23mm schwalbe pro ones. Run them at 80psi. Feel and ride great. The schwalbe and hed rims have really compatible sizing so it’s not super hard to mount the tire, but tight enough to create a really good seal.
No issues with the Schwalbes in terms of durability?
Surprised at the 23mm. Schwalbes “lightbulb” a bit? I run 25mm Conti GP4000s and without a micrometer, they appear to be a near perfect fit from an aero standpoint.
Admittedly, I’d have a tough time going Tubeless for no rolling resistance gain…
In my experience the GP5000TL isn’t quite durable enough for an everyday tyre (UK roads). It is a low rolling resistance race tyre which they seem to have achieved by making the sidewalls a bit fragile.
The 4000 managed to be a race tyre that you could use everyday but they don’t seem to have pulled off the same trick this time.
Just to report back, the Vittoria Corsas went on my DT Swiss 1100 ERC rims basically by hand, and seem to be sealing fine.
No issues with durability. I also have a hed Belgium wheelset that I have 25mm schwalbe pro ones set up the same way. I run that wheel set a lot on a rail trail, small chipped gravel with occasional bigger gravels.
Both wheelsets are 21mm internal. If I remember correctly, my 23mm measure closer to 25mm which is the correct size for the aero ability of the jets. Although I’m starting to believe less in that idea. And they don’t light bulb. But I give credit for that to the wide rims.
The narrower front tire is better aerodynamically if it marries up smoothly with the wheel and faring. Not much debate about that. My 25mm contis appear to be almost perfect to naked eye. A micrometer may show differently. Really just depends on the wheel and tire combo.
In any event, it is more important for that perfect airfoil on the front wheel, matters less on the back. I am a proponent of running narrow front, wide back for road… aero where it matters, better contact patch where your weight is. (E.g. 23 front, 25 rear).
After reading this thread I decided I’m not ready to use Tubeless just yet ![]()
All the hassle with installation really does not seem worth it to me… maybe in the future when it is easier to install.
Raced and Trained on Pro Ones all 2019. Excellent grip in all conditions, had the only puncture that I noticed puncture seal really fast.
For this year will keep the 28mm Pro ones for training but going to race on Vittoria Corsas as they’re supposedly a bit faster.
Remember tubeless vs latex tubes will be about the same rolling resistance at the same pressure, but being able to run lower pressures with tubeless will be a big plus in wet conditions, or if the surface is bad, or if you’re in a long ride/race and comfort becomes a factor.
For installation - Get an Airshot or similar. If you still have problems seating them, install with a tube at max pressure and leave overnight.
Does anyone know how to get hands on the hunt rim tape outside the official hunt shop? I really like it and I am sure that it is some kind of usual tape that´s quite cheap.
That looks like electrical tape, although I’m sure it’s not! Does it feel stiffer than electrical tape?
This is what I’ve used on all my tubeless setups (well, all rims actually):
Also comes in 19mm, you will probably need the 25 though.
Yes, feels much stiffer. Still, very easy to mount. One layer is enough to seal the rim.
1 year in and no flats (that I know of) on my GP5000TL on New Zealand roads which are almost as bad as UK roads. A few flats on the previous set up of GP4000s.
I just ordered some gp 5000s then thought immediately after clicking buy tht my zipp 30 course wheels are, I think anyway, tubeless ready. It so, immediately regretting the order!
(Ofc can send back.).
Two years in with Pro V Ones and Enve 4.5’s. Love the combo. Found Enve tape the best and I use a Hot shot to seat them. Was quite the learning curve. I get a no leak seal without sealant. The only problem I have now is getting them OFF the rim. Someone mentioned channel locks which is OK if the tire is to be discarded. Tried that once and ruined the tire. I WOULD LOVE suggestions/tools on dismounting the tires. No flats in 2019. One sidewall cut in 2018, sealed enough for the final 10 miles back to the car. I use orange seal. Final note…the tires do wear fast but I’m gifted a few by my adult children so all good!

There are tools like this that are supposed to make it easier. I’ve never tried them, but have heard they work well. Kinda like your channel locks but made specifically for bike tires.
Thanks for the tip. Just ordered.
Not sure if answered before. I just went tubeless, what do I need to have with me on the road in case of a flat? I heard about some sealant foam?
Lots of opinions here:
